What this error means

Anti-flood protection activated — water has been detected in the dishwasher base

The F11 error on a Miele dishwasher means the anti-flood system has detected water in the base tray beneath the tub and has stopped the programme to prevent flooding. On Miele dishwashers this system is called the Waterproof System and is particularly sensitive. The most common causes are a leaking door seal, a split or loose internal hose, a pump seal failure, or the Waterproof float sensor becoming stuck in the raised position after a previous water ingress event.

Step-by-step

1
Unplug the dishwasher immediately
Water in the machine base near electrical components is a serious hazard
2
Turn off the water supply tap under the sink
If the inlet valve has a fault water may continue entering even with the machine powered off
3
Do not tilt or move the machine immediately
Moving it too quickly can spread water from the base tray towards electrical components
4
Place towels around the base and wait 5 minutes before opening the door to assess the tub water level

Symptoms to look for

  1. F11 displayed during any programme phase
  2. Water visible on the floor directly under the Miele dishwasher
  3. Machine starts then immediately activates drain pump and displays F11 without completing the fill
  4. Slight water film appearing under the machine after several cycles

Isolate and assess

Both unplugging and turning off the water supply are essential before any inspection.

Even with the dishwasher unplugged, if the water supply tap is open and the inlet valve has a fault, water can continue entering. Turn the tap fully off at the wall before any further steps.
Identify the source of the water

Remove the lower kickplate panel carefully. Shine a torch into the machine base and look for where the water originated — check around the door seal edge, the pump body, the sump underside, the inlet hose internal connection, and the drain hose connection to the pump. On Miele dishwashers look in particular around the circulation pump shaft seal which can weep on older machines.

Lay dry paper towels across the base floor before inspection — check which area shows moisture first. This reliably identifies the leak source without needing to dismantle anything.
Inspect the Miele door seal

Open the door and examine the rubber door seal around its full circumference. Miele door seals are thicker than on most other dishwashers and are designed to be very long-lasting, but small cracks or tears at the lower corners can develop over many years of use. Press gently into the full length of the seal.

On Miele dishwashers the door seal is replaceable by the user — it clips into a retaining channel and can be pressed out and replaced without tools. A Miele-genuine replacement seal is recommended.
Check all internal hose connections

With the kickplate removed and the machine unplugged, inspect all hose connections — the inlet hose inside the machine, the circulation hose between the sump and pump, and the drain hose connection at the pump outlet. All should be secured by Miele's clip system. Check that no clip has released and no hose has worked off its stub.

Do not touch any wiring or electrical connectors while standing water is present in the base. Dry the area first.
Dry the base tray and reset the Waterproof sensor

Once the source has been found and repaired, dry the base tray completely using dry cloths and allow 2 to 3 hours to air dry with the kickplate removed. The Miele Waterproof float sensor must return to its fully resting position on a completely dry surface before the machine will allow a cycle.

The Miele Waterproof sensor is more sensitive than anti-flood sensors on many other brands — even a small amount of residual moisture can keep it triggered. Confirm the base is bone dry before reassembling.
Run a monitored test

Restore power and water and run a Quick Intensive programme while remaining present. After 5 minutes check the base tray through the kickplate opening. If the base remains completely dry throughout the cycle the repair is successful.

Do not leave the machine unattended during the first test cycle after F11. Stop and unplug immediately if any water appears in the base.

When to call an engineer

  • Door seal is cracked, torn, or has separated from its retaining channel — genuine Miele replacement required
  • Circulation pump shaft seal is weeping — water present around the pump body with no hose leak visible
  • Miele Waterproof float sensor remains raised even after the base tray has been completely dried — sensor needs replacing
  • Source of water in the base cannot be identified after full visual inspection — Miele service required
Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Is F11 dangerous on a Miele dishwasher?
Water in the base near electrical components is a potential hazard. Always unplug and turn off the water supply before inspecting, and never touch wiring while the base is wet.
Will the Miele Waterproof sensor reset itself when dry?
Yes — once the base tray is completely dry the float returns to its resting position. However you must identify and fix the source of the water first or F11 will return on the next cycle.
Can the Miele door seal be replaced by the user?
Yes — Miele door seals are designed to be user-replaceable. The seal clips into a retaining channel and can be replaced by pressing the old seal out and pressing the new genuine Miele seal in.
Is F11 on the Miele dishwasher the same as the Waterproof System?
Yes — F11 is the fault code the Miele control board displays when the Waterproof System float sensor is triggered by water in the base tray.

🎯 What is likely causing this fault?

💧
Internal leak (seals, sump, hoses) 50%
💧
Oversudsing / detergent issue 20%
⚠️
Circulation system leak (pump seals) 15%
📡
Float switch fault 10%

Wiring / PCB 5%
