What this error means

Door lock fault — the machine cannot detect or secure the door correctly

The F34 error means the door lock mechanism has failed to engage or has lost contact with the control board. This prevents the cycle from starting or continuing. On Miele washing machines this is most commonly caused by the door not being pushed fully shut, debris caught in the door seal, a worn or cracked latch hook, or a failing door interlock switch. Miele door interlock switches are more precise than those on many other brands and wear or misalignment can cause F34 before the lock fails completely.

Step-by-step

1
Push the door firmly shut with both hands on the outer plastic frame until you hear a definite click
Miele door locks require full engagement and a partial click is not sufficient to prevent F34
2
Run your fingers slowly around the full rubber honeycomb door seal feeling for trapped items
Miele machines have a thicker door seal than most brands and items can lodge in folds that are not immediately visible
3
Unplug the machine, wait 60 seconds, then plug back in
This resets the door lock circuit and clears faults caused by temporary signal errors
4
Select a short Rinse and Spin programme to confirm whether the fault has cleared

Symptoms to look for

  1. Door will not lock at the start of a programme
  2. Machine starts then stops immediately with F34 on the Miele display
  3. Cycle pauses mid-wash with a door fault
  4. Door appears fully closed but the machine will not begin

Check the door is fully closed

Press the door firmly with both hands on the outer plastic frame — never push on the glass. You should hear and feel a solid, definite click as the Miele latch engages. The door face must sit completely flush with the machine body with no gap visible at any point.

Miele door locks have a two-stage engagement — a light initial resistance followed by a firmer click as the lock fully seats. The programme will not start unless the second stage has been reached.
Inspect the door seal for obstructions

Run your fingers slowly around the entire rubber door seal, pressing firmly into the deep folds of the Miele honeycomb seal design. Feel for trapped clothing, coins, hair grips, or any debris. Remove anything found carefully. Pay extra attention to the lower section and the inner fold where items collect most.

Do not force the door closed if you feel resistance in the seal. Miele door glass is bonded directly to the outer door panel — forcing the door against an obstruction can crack the glass or damage the precision latch mechanism.
Examine the door latch hook and catch plate

Open the door and inspect the Miele latch hook on the door edge. On Miele machines the latch hook is a precision-moulded component — check it carefully for any cracking, chipping, or deformation that would prevent full engagement. Examine the catch plate slot on the machine body for alignment.

Miele recommends using only genuine Miele replacement latch assemblies if the hook is damaged. Non-genuine parts may not engage the precision interlock switch correctly and will produce repeated F34.
Inspect the door interlock switch

With the machine unplugged, look into the catch plate opening on the machine body. The Miele interlock switch is a precision component inside the catch housing. Check it is not obstructed, discoloured, or showing signs of burning.

Always unplug before inspecting any internal electrical component. The door interlock carries mains voltage during operation.
Check the door hinges

Open the door fully and examine the hinges at the top and bottom of the door. Apply gentle upward pressure on the door edge — if it lifts noticeably the hinge is worn. Miele door hinges maintain their tension well but heavy doors on older machines can develop play that causes misalignment with the precision catch plate.

Miele sells replacement door hinges as genuine spare parts. If the door sags significantly the hinges should be replaced to prevent repeated F34 and to avoid damage to the door glass.
Perform a full power reset

Unplug and hold the power button for 5 seconds. Leave unplugged for 60 seconds. Plug back in and try a short programme.

Miele control boards can latch an F34 code after a power interruption mid-cycle. A full power discharge clears this without any physical fault being present.

When to call an engineer

  • Door interlock switch fails a continuity test with a multimeter — genuine Miele replacement required
  • Door latch hook is visibly cracked or deformed — genuine Miele latch assembly required
  • Door hinges are worn causing the door to sag and misalign with the catch plate
  • Wiring to the Miele door interlock is burnt or the connector has melted
Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Is F34 dangerous?
The fault itself is not dangerous, but never force the door open or attempt to run the machine while F34 is active. The door could open under spin pressure.
Why does Miele use a more precise door lock than other brands?
Miele's precision interlock is part of their quality standard. It provides more reliable feedback to the control board that the door is truly secured but is less tolerant of wear, misalignment, or debris than simpler lock designs.
Will the machine drain before the door unlocks after F34?
Yes — Miele machines complete a drain before releasing the door lock. If the door stays locked after unplugging, wait 2 minutes for the Miele solenoid to release naturally.
Should I use genuine Miele parts to replace the door latch?
Yes — Miele recommends genuine replacement parts for the door latch assembly. Non-genuine latch hooks may not align correctly with the precision interlock switch and can cause persistent F34 even after replacement.
