What this error means

Motor fault — the drum motor is unable to run or rotate correctly

The E21 error means the motor that drives the drum is not functioning correctly. The motor is responsible for all drum movement during washing, rinsing, and spinning. This fault is most commonly caused by worn carbon brushes, a broken drive belt, a foreign object jamming the drum, or a wiring fault to the motor. A failed motor control module can also produce this error.

Step-by-step

1
Unplug the machine and wait at least 5 minutes to allow the motor thermal protection to reset
Motors have a built-in cut-out that trips when overheated and needs time to cool
2
Open the door and try rotating the drum slowly by hand
It should turn with gentle resistance in both directions. Note any grinding, clicking, or stiffness.
3
Check the drum for any items that could have fallen between the drum and the outer tub
Coins, bra wires, and hair grips are common causes of drum obstruction
4
Remove some load if the drum is packed tightly
An overloaded drum puts excessive strain on the motor and drive belt
5
Plug back in and select a Spin Only programme to test whether the drum will turn

Symptoms to look for

  1. Drum not spinning or tumbling at any stage of the programme
  2. Drum jerks or stutters rather than rotating smoothly
  3. Loud humming or buzzing from the motor area without drum movement
  4. Burning smell during or after a cycle attempt
  5. Machine fills with water and heats but the drum remains stationary

Diagnostic steps

Time 45–90 minutes

Check drum rotation by hand

With the machine unplugged, open the door and place one hand flat inside the drum. Slowly rotate the drum clockwise for one full turn, then anti-clockwise. You should feel smooth, even resistance throughout — like turning against a light spring. Any grinding, catching, clicking, or complete blockage indicates a physical obstruction or a mechanical fault.

Do not force the drum if it feels completely seized. Forcing it can cause further damage to the drum bearings, spider arm, or motor shaft.
Allow motor thermal cutout to reset

The motor contains a thermal cutout that automatically disconnects the motor if it overheats — this is a safety feature. Leave the machine fully unplugged with the door open for at least 15 minutes to allow complete cooling. Plug back in and retry.

If E21 appears only after a long hot programme and clears after cooling, the motor is likely overheating due to worn brushes increasing electrical resistance and generating excess heat.
Check for items trapped between drum and outer tub

With the machine unplugged, shine a torch through the drum perforations and look into the space between the drum and the outer tub. Foreign objects such as coins, bra underwires, buttons, or small toys frequently fall through and jam the drum. Use long-nose pliers or a flexible grabber tool to retrieve anything you can see.

Do not reach bare-handed into the gap — the drum edge and trapped items can cause cuts.
Access and inspect the drive belt

With the machine unplugged, remove the rear panel by undoing the screws around its edge. The drive belt loops around the drum pulley at the top and around the motor pulley at the bottom. Check whether the belt is present, correctly seated in both pulleys, and under tension. A snapped or slipped belt means the motor runs but the drum does not move.

Only access the rear panel with the machine completely unplugged. The capacitor on the motor can retain charge briefly after unplugging — wait 30 seconds before touching motor terminals.
Inspect the motor carbon brushes

The motor has two carbon brush holders — one on each side of the motor body. Each holder has a spring-loaded carbon rod that presses against the motor commutator. Remove each brush holder by pressing the tab and sliding it out. The carbon rod should be at least 5 to 7 mm long. Brushes shorter than this have worn out and must be replaced.

Worn brushes are the most common cause of E21 on machines over 4 years old. They are inexpensive and straightforward to replace — both brushes should always be replaced at the same time.
Check motor wiring and connectors

With the machine unplugged, inspect the wiring loom that connects the motor to the machine's main harness. Check that the multi-pin connector is firmly seated. Look for any burnt insulation, chafed wires where the loom runs near moving parts, or loose spade terminals on the motor body. Disconnect and firmly reconnect the main motor connector.

Do not attempt to test motor windings with a multimeter while the motor is connected to the wiring loom. Disconnect the loom first.

When to call an engineer

  • Carbon brushes are worn below 5 mm — both must be replaced
  • Drive belt is snapped, cracked, or has come off the motor or drum pulley
  • Foreign object is visible between drum and outer tub and cannot be safely retrieved
  • Motor winding fails a continuity test on a multimeter — motor needs replacing
  • Motor control module is not supplying power to the motor despite correct input signals
Common questions

Frequently asked questions

What does E21 mean on a Siemens washing machine?
It means the motor that drives the drum has failed to start or has stopped unexpectedly during a cycle.
Can worn carbon brushes be replaced at home?
Yes — motor brushes are one of the most common and accessible DIY repairs on a washing machine. Both brushes should be replaced together and parts are widely available for most Siemens models.
How do I know if it is the belt or the motor that has failed?
If the drum turns freely by hand but the motor runs without moving the drum, the belt has snapped or slipped. If the drum is stiff or the motor makes no noise at all, the motor itself is the likely cause.
Is there any danger when working on the motor?
The main risk is electric shock. Always unplug the machine before removing panels. Wait 30 seconds before touching motor terminals as the capacitor retains a charge briefly after disconnection.
