What this error means

The F18 error code on your Whirlpool washing machine means the machine has detected a drain blockage — water is not draining away quickly enough and the machine has stopped to prevent overflow.

The F18 error is a drain blockage fault and is closely related to F05. While F05 is the primary drainage error triggered when the machine fails to drain within the expected time, F18 can indicate a more specific blockage detection — often triggered during or at the end of a cycle when the pump cannot clear water from the drum at the expected flow rate. The causes are identical to F05: a blocked pump filter is the most common culprit, followed by a kinked or improperly fitted drain hose, a blocked household waste pipe or sink trap, and in a minority of cases a failing drain pump motor. The fix process is also identical — always start by cleaning the pump filter before investigating further. F18 is one of the most straightforward error codes to resolve yourself.

Step-by-step

1
Switch the machine off and unplug it immediately
Do not attempt to access the pump filter while the machine is connected to power.
2
Lay towels and place a shallow tray under the filter access panel at the bottom front of the machine
Water will be present inside the drum and pump housing.
3
Slowly unscrew the filter cap anticlockwise
Release the water gradually into the tray in small amounts. Take care if the water is hot.
4
Remove the filter fully and rinse it under the tap
Clear all fluff, coins, hairgrips, or any other debris from the filter and from inside the housing cavity.
5
Straighten and inspect the drain hose at the back
Check for kinks, bends, or the hose being pushed too far into the standpipe (no more than 15 cm).
6
Refit the filter clockwise until hand-tight and close the access panel
Ensure the cap is fully seated to prevent leaking.
7
Plug the machine back in and run a spin cycle to test
If water drains and F18 is gone, the issue is resolved.

Symptoms to look for

  1. F18 displayed on the control panel
  2. Water remaining in the drum at the end of a cycle
  3. Machine stopping mid-cycle and refusing to continue
  4. Door locked due to standing water in the drum
  5. Loud buzzing from pump area with no water movement

How to fix it

Time 20–35 minutes
Skill Anyone
Disconnect power

Turn the machine off at the wall and unplug it fully before doing anything else. Pull the machine forward slightly to access the back if needed. Place old towels on the floor around the front and back.

Access and drain the filter

Find the filter access flap at the bottom front of the machine — it is usually a rectangular panel that opens by pressing or levering with a flat-head screwdriver. Inside you will find the filter cap and, on most Whirlpool models, a small emergency drain hose with a removable rubber cap. Use the emergency drain hose first if present — pull the cap and direct the flow into a shallow bowl or tray, emptying and repeating until dry. Then unscrew the main filter cap slowly anticlockwise.

Keep the tray close and have extra towels ready. Machines mid-cycle can hold several litres of water.
Clean the filter thoroughly

Fully remove the filter cap and take it to the sink. Rinse under running water and use an old toothbrush to scrub off any limescale, fluff, or debris. Look inside the filter housing on the machine with a torch — clear anything you see there too. Common finds include coins, hairgrips, fragments of bra underwire, buttons, and compacted lint.

Finding debris is a sign that pockets are not being emptied before washing. Make a habit of checking pockets before every load to reduce the frequency of F18 faults.
Check the drain hose

Trace the drain hose from the back of the machine to the standpipe or waste pipe. Check the entire length for kinks, tight bends, or anywhere the hose is pinched — particularly where it passes through a gap or behind furniture. At the standpipe, confirm the hose end is inserted no more than 15 cm. If it is pushed deeper, pull it out to 10–15 cm and secure it with the supplied hose clip.

Test the household waste pipe

If the drain hose shares the same waste connection as your kitchen sink, run the sink at full flow and observe whether the water drains freely. A slow-draining sink or standing water in the sink during the machine's drain phase points to a shared pipe blockage. Clear the sink trap and, if needed, use a drain unblocker on the waste pipe.

Retest

Refit the filter cap clockwise until hand-tight, close the access flap, and plug the machine back in. Select a short spin-only or rinse-and-spin programme and watch it through to completion. If the water clears and F18 does not appear, the repair is successful.

When to call an engineer

  • F18 returns after cleaning filter and checking hose and waste pipe
  • Drain pump making loud humming but water not moving
  • No blockage found but machine still will not drain
  • Pump impeller found to be cracked or seized
  • Wiring fault suspected on pump circuit
Common questions

Frequently asked questions

What does F18 mean on a Whirlpool washing machine?
F18 means the machine has detected a drain blockage — water is not leaving the drum at the expected rate. It is most commonly caused by a blocked pump filter or a kinked drain hose.
What is the difference between F05 and F18 on a Whirlpool washing machine?
Both codes relate to drainage failure. F05 is the primary drain timeout fault while F18 is a more specific blockage detection code. The cause and fix process are the same for both — always start by cleaning the pump filter.
Can I fix F18 myself on a Whirlpool washing machine?
Yes, in the majority of cases. Cleaning the pump filter and checking the drain hose are straightforward tasks anyone can do safely in under 15 minutes.
How often should I clean the pump filter on my Whirlpool washing machine?
Every 3 months as a minimum. If you wash heavily soiled laundry, items with pet hair, or large quantities of lint-producing fabrics, clean it monthly.
Why does my Whirlpool washing machine show F18 even after I cleaned the filter?
If F18 returns after the filter has been cleaned, check that the drain hose is not kinked or inserted too far into the standpipe, and check that the shared household waste pipe is not blocked. If all of these are clear, the drain pump motor may be failing and an engineer is needed.
