What this error means

Drainage fault — the dishwasher cannot empty water from the tub within the expected time.

The i20 error on a Zanussi dishwasher means the machine has failed to drain water from the tub within the programmed drain time window. Zanussi dishwashers monitor drainage progress continuously and display i20 when water has not been removed successfully. The most common causes are a blocked or dirty filter assembly at the base of the tub, a foreign object jamming the drain pump impeller, a kinked or incorrectly installed drain hose, or a blocked household sink waste trap preventing water from leaving the machine. A failed drain pump motor will also produce this code.

Step-by-step

1
Unplug the dishwasher from the mains before starting any inspection
The drain pump can activate unexpectedly if power is present and will spray hot water without warning
2
Remove the lower dish basket and unscrew the cylindrical coarse filter at the base of the tub by turning it anti-clockwise, then lift out the flat fine mesh filter beneath it
Have a towel ready as residual water will be present in the tub base
3
Rinse both filter components thoroughly under warm running water and scrub all mesh surfaces with an old toothbrush
A blocked filter assembly is the single most common cause of i20 and cleaning it resolves the fault in the majority of cases
4
Check the full length of the drain hose for kinks and confirm the end in the standpipe is no more than 10 to 12 cm deep
A household drain trap that is beginning to block will also slow drainage regardless of the machine's own condition
5
Refit the filters firmly, plug in, and run a Quick Wash to test

Symptoms to look for

  1. Water clearly visible standing in the base of the tub at the end of a programme
  2. Dishwasher stops mid-cycle with standing water remaining in the tub
  3. Grinding, rattling, or loud humming from the base of the machine during the drain phase
  4. i20 displayed near the end of a wash or rinse programme

How to fix it

Time 20–40 minutes
Skill Competent DIY
Prepare the machine safely before starting

Unplug the dishwasher from the mains. If the machine stopped mid-cycle there may be hot, soapy water standing in the tub base — have a towel ready to absorb any spillage when you open the door.

Always unplug the dishwasher before reaching into the filter area at the base of the tub. The drain pump can activate without warning if power is present and will spray hot water directly at the operator.
Remove and clean the complete filter assembly

Open the door and remove the lower basket. Unscrew the cylindrical coarse filter by turning it anti-clockwise and lift it out. Then lift out the flat fine mesh filter that sits in the recess beneath it. Rinse both filters under warm running water, scrubbing all surfaces with a toothbrush to remove food grease, soap residue, and debris.

Hold the fine mesh filter up to a light source after cleaning to confirm all holes are fully open and unobstructed. Even a thin film of grease across the mesh is enough to restrict drainage sufficiently to trigger i20.
Inspect the sump and drain pump entrance

With both filter components removed, shine a torch into the sump cavity. Look carefully for glass fragments, small bones, fruit stones, or solid debris blocking the drain pump entrance. Try to rotate the pump impeller very gently using a non-metallic implement such as a wooden cocktail stick. It should turn with slight, even resistance.

Use a torch and inspect carefully before inserting any implement or finger into the sump. Broken glass and ceramic fragments can reach the sump and will cause deep cuts without warning.
Inspect and reposition the drain hose

Pull the dishwasher forward slightly from under the counter and inspect the drain hose along its full accessible length. Straighten all kinks and bends. The hose end in the standpipe should be no more than 10 to 12 centimetres deep — any deeper creates a continuous syphon that prevents proper drainage. The hose should loop upward to at least 40 centimetres above floor level before descending to the waste connection.

Check the household sink waste trap — a partially blocked trap is a frequently overlooked cause of i20 because the pump cannot force water past a blocked household outlet regardless of its own condition. Remove and clean the trap if accessible.
Run a drain test to confirm the repair

Refit both filter components, locking the cylindrical filter firmly clockwise. Replace the lower basket. Plug in and run a Quick Wash. You should hear the drain pump activate and water should flow from the drain hose within 60 seconds of the cycle starting.

If the pump activates with a grinding or rattling noise but no water flows from the hose, there is still solid debris in the pump body that cannot be cleared from the sump side. The pump will need to be removed for a full internal inspection.

When to call an engineer

  • Drain pump impeller will not rotate by hand after filter removal — solid debris is inside the pump body or the impeller is broken
  • Drain pump motor hums continuously but produces no water movement — motor winding has failed
  • i20 returns immediately after a thorough filter clean and drain hose check
  • Burning smell or scorch marks visible beneath the dishwasher near the pump location
Common questions

Frequently asked questions

How often should I clean the filter on my Zanussi dishwasher to prevent i20?
Zanussi recommends cleaning both filter components after every 10 to 15 wash cycles. With daily use this typically means at least a weekly clean. Households with hard water or heavily soiled dishes should clean more frequently.
Can a blocked household drain cause i20 on a Zanussi dishwasher?
Yes — if the sink waste trap or standpipe is blocked, the dishwasher pump cannot force water out regardless of its own internal condition. Always check and clear the household drain before concluding the machine has a fault.
What is the correct drain hose installation to prevent i20?
The drain hose should loop upward to at least 40 centimetres above floor level before descending to the waste connection. The hose end in the standpipe should be no deeper than 10 to 12 centimetres and must not be sealed against the pipe wall so air can enter around it.
Is it safe to leave water standing in the dishwasher after i20 appears?
Not for more than a few hours — warm stagnant water encourages bacteria and mould growth in the tub, spray arms, and filter assembly. Resolve the drainage fault as soon as possible.
