What this error means

Drainage fault — the washing machine cannot empty water from the drum

The F11 error means the machine has failed to drain within the expected time. On Miele washing machines this is most commonly caused by a blocked pump filter, a kinked drain hose, or a foreign object jamming the pump impeller. Miele machines often feature a secondary lint trap in addition to the main pump filter — both must be checked. A failing drain pump motor will also produce this fault.

Step-by-step

1
Unplug the machine before doing anything
This is essential for your safety before opening the filter or touching any part of the drainage system
2
Place a towel and shallow tray under the small access flap at the bottom front of the machine
Water will escape when the filter cap is turned so prepare before opening it
3
Slowly turn the filter cap anti-clockwise by a quarter turn only to release trapped water as a controlled trickle
Turning it fully immediately causes a sudden rush of hot water that will flood the floor
4
Unscrew the cap fully and clear all coins, hair, lint, and debris from the filter and the housing cavity
Even a partial blockage prevents effective drainage
5
Check the drain hose at the rear for kinks and confirm the standpipe insertion is no more than 15 cm deep
A hose pushed in further creates a syphon that actively prevents drainage
6
Refit the filter firmly clockwise and run a Spin or Drain programme to confirm the fault has cleared

Symptoms to look for

  1. Water visible in the drum at the end of a cycle
  2. Machine stops mid-programme with water remaining in the drum
  3. Straining, gurgling, or loud humming from the pump area during draining
  4. F11 displayed near the end of a wash or rinse phase

How to fix it

Time 20–40 minutes
Skill Anyone
Prepare for water spillage

Unplug the machine — this step is not optional. Lay several old towels on the floor and get a shallow baking tray ready. Even after a failed drain there can be 3 to 5 litres of water trapped inside.

Never remove the pump filter with the machine plugged in. The pump motor can activate unexpectedly if power is present, causing a sudden uncontrolled release of hot water.
Access and drain through the filter

At the bottom front, open the small flap or kick-strip panel. Place your tray under the round filter cap. Turn the cap anti-clockwise by a quarter turn only to release water as a controlled trickle. Empty the tray as needed, then unscrew the cap fully and pull the filter out.

Miele machines stopped mid-wash retain hot water. Allow a few minutes to cool before draining if possible.
Clean the filter and any lint trap

Miele washing machines often have both a main pump filter and a secondary fine mesh lint trap — consult your model's user manual for the lint trap location, which is typically behind the same access panel. Rinse both under warm running water and scrub all mesh holes with an old toothbrush to clear lint, fibre, and debris completely.

Feel slowly around the pump entrance for trapped objects — sharp items such as hair grips, coins, and glass fragments can reach the pump housing and cause cuts.
Check the pump impeller

Shine a torch into the filter cavity. At the back you should see the impeller — a small plastic fan. Try to rotate it gently with one finger. It should spin freely with light resistance. If stiff or completely seized there is a blockage in the pump body or a broken impeller blade.

A small sock or thin garment wrapped tightly around the impeller is one of the most common causes of F11 on Miele machines. It will not be visible from the filter side and may require the pump to be removed to clear it.
Inspect the drain hose

Trace the corrugated drain hose to the standpipe or sink. Straighten all kinks and bends. The hose end must be inserted no more than 15 cm into the standpipe and must not be sealed against the pipe walls. The lowest point of the hose must be at least 60 cm from the floor.

A hose sealed too deeply into the standpipe creates a continuous syphon that tries to drain the machine during filling, generating repeated F11 codes even after the filter has been cleaned.
Run a drain programme

Refit the filter firmly clockwise. Plug back in and select Spin Only or a Drain programme. You should hear the pump activate within seconds and water should flow from the drain hose.

If the pump hums loudly but no water moves there is still a blockage in the pump body that will require the pump to be removed for inspection.

When to call an engineer

  • Pump impeller cracked or will not turn by hand after filter removal
  • Pump hums but produces no water movement — motor winding has failed
  • F11 returns immediately after filter and lint trap cleaning and hose check
  • Burning smell or scorch marks in the pump area under the machine
Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Can I drain the drum manually when F11 stops mid-cycle?
Yes — unplug the machine, place a tray under the filter panel, and very slowly unscrew the filter cap to drain water in a controlled flow.
How often should I clean the Miele pump filter?
Miele recommends monthly checks. Clean both the pump filter and lint trap every 1 to 2 months with normal use.
Why does F11 return after I cleaned the filter?
A foreign object may have since passed through and jammed the impeller, or the drain hose has developed a new kink. Check both before assuming the pump has failed.
Does Miele have a secondary lint filter I should clean?
Yes — many Miele models have a fine mesh lint trap in addition to the main pump filter. Both must be cleaned to fully resolve F11.
