What this error means
Circulation or flow fault — the machine is not detecting adequate water circulation through the drum
The F14 error means the machine's flow monitoring system has detected that water is not circulating correctly through the drum during the wash phase. On Miele washing machines this most commonly indicates a blocked or restricted recirculation filter or pump, low water volume reaching the circulation pump, or a failed circulation pump motor. Some Miele models use F14 to indicate the flow meter is not detecting adequate flow during circulation.
Step-by-step
Symptoms to look for
- Machine fills normally but the wash phase does not begin — no drum tumbling sound during circulation
- F14 displayed during the wash heating phase rather than during filling or draining
- Machine makes an unusual humming sound during the wash phase that stops before F14 appears
- Programme completes filling and heating but stalls before tumbling begins
Diagnostic steps
With the machine unplugged, access the pump filter and any secondary lint trap. Both must be completely clean — even partial blockages reduce the flow rate through the circulation pump below the threshold that Miele machines accept. Remove all lint, fibres, coins, and debris. Rinse the filter housing cavity and check the pump impeller rotates freely.
Add a Miele-approved washing machine cleaner or descaler to the empty drum and run a 90-degree programme with no laundry. Miele machines with high usage accumulate detergent and limescale deposits inside the circulation pump housing and hoses over time, progressively reducing flow. A service wash is recommended every 1 to 3 months by Miele.
F14 can appear if the drum does not contain enough water for the circulation pump to operate correctly. Confirm F12 and F13 are not also present — if the machine has not filled correctly there will not be enough water to circulate.
With the machine unplugged, remove the rear panel. On Miele machines the circulation pump is a separate component from the drain pump — it is typically mounted at the lower front or side of the drum and circulates water through the heating circuit during the wash phase. Check the wiring connector to the pump is fully seated.
With the machine unplugged and the pump wiring connector disconnected, test across the pump motor terminals with a multimeter set to resistance. Consult Miele service documentation for the expected resistance value for your specific model. An open circuit (OL) reading confirms the pump motor has failed.
Some Miele models use a flow meter in the circulation circuit. This is a small cylindrical component with a rotating impeller inside and a Hall effect sensor. With the machine unplugged, check the flow meter connector is fully seated and the body shows no cracking or mineral deposits around the ports.
When to call an engineer
- Circulation pump motor reads open circuit on a multimeter — pump has failed
- Flow meter impeller is seized and will not turn after cleaning — flow meter needs replacing
- F14 appears despite clean filters, correct fill, and circulation pump connector seated — control board fault
- Wiring to the circulation pump is burnt, corroded, or the connector has melted
