What this error means
Water in base — the machine has detected water in the base tray, indicating an internal leak.
The E30 error on a Zanussi washing machine means the anti-flood float switch in the machine base tray has been activated. Every Zanussi washing machine has a shallow plastic tray in its base that collects water from any internal leak. A float switch sits in this tray and triggers E30 as soon as water is detected. This is a safety-critical fault designed to prevent flooding. The most common causes are a leaking door seal, a loose or cracked internal hose connection, excessive detergent foam overflowing from the drum, a leaking drum bearing seal, or a cracked outer drum. The machine will remain locked out until the water in the base tray is physically removed.

Step-by-step
Symptoms to look for
- E30 displayed at any point during a programme
- Machine refuses to start any programme after E30 has appeared
- Water visible on the floor beneath the machine
- Smell of damp or mildew from beneath or behind the machine
Diagnostic steps
Disconnect the machine from the mains power immediately. E30 means water is present inside the electrical base of the machine, in close proximity to the motor, wiring harness, and control board. Investigating or attempting to use the machine while powered is a serious electrocution risk.
With the machine unplugged and the water supply turned off, pull the machine forward from the wall. With a second person assisting, tilt it carefully backwards at approximately 45 degrees. Hold this position for 30 to 60 seconds to allow water in the base tray to run towards the rear ventilation openings and out onto the floor. Place towels behind the machine before tilting.
After draining by tilting, stand the machine upright and remove the lower access panel or kick strip to allow air to circulate into the base. If possible, direct a hair dryer on a cool, low setting into the base for five to ten minutes. The float switch must be completely dry before E30 will clear.
Excessive foam from too much detergent, non-HE detergent, or the wrong product for your machine overflows during the wash phase and drips into the base tray without any hose or seal failure. This is one of the most common causes of E30 in otherwise healthy machines. Confirm you are using the correct detergent in the correct quantity for your water hardness.
With the base dry and E30 cleared, restore power and water and run a Cotton 30-degree programme. Observe the machine throughout the full cycle, watching particularly around the door seal, the detergent drawer, and beneath the machine during the drain phase.
With the machine unplugged and tilted or on its side, remove the base cover panel to view the tray and float switch directly. The float arm should be in the lowered, resting position with the tray completely dry. Confirm the arm moves freely with no debris or wire holding it raised.
When to call an engineer
- Drum bearing seal is leaking — water marks visible at the rear of the drum when the machine is tilted
- Door seal is visibly cracked, torn, or has holes — must be replaced before the machine is used again
- Outer drum tub has a crack or fracture — requires specialist assessment and repair
- E30 persists with the base completely dry — float switch has failed in the triggered position
