What this error means

Electrical issue with the drain pump — the control board has detected an abnormal electrical condition in the pump circuit.

The E23 error on a Zanussi washing machine indicates the main control board has detected an electrical fault specifically within the drain pump circuit. Unlike E20 or E21 which relate to drainage failures caused by blockages, E23 points to an electrical problem — such as a short circuit in the pump motor, an open circuit in the pump wiring, a failed motor winding, or a corroded wiring connector between the board and the pump. A failed control board relay that drives the pump circuit can also produce this code.

Step-by-step

1
Unplug the machine from the mains and wait a full 10 minutes before restoring power
The control board requires a complete power discharge to reset after detecting an electrical fault in the pump circuit
2
Clean the pump filter as a matter of course while the machine is unplugged
A severely blocked filter causes the pump motor to draw abnormal current that the board can register as an electrical fault
3
Plug back in and run a Drain or Spin programme to test whether the fault clears after the reset
A fault caused by a one-off electrical spike will not reappear after a full reset
4
If E23 returns immediately on the first attempt, proceed to the wiring and pump diagnostic steps below
Do not continue running the machine with a persistent electrical fault in the pump circuit
Diagnostic

Symptoms to look for

  1. Machine stops at the end of a wash or rinse cycle with water still in the drum
  2. E23 displayed during the drain or spin phase
  3. Pump makes no sound at all during a Spin programme
  4. Machine drains successfully on some cycles but shows E23 intermittently

Diagnostic steps

Time 30–60 minutes
Skill Professional may be required
Perform a full power discharge

Unplug the machine and hold the power button for 10 seconds to drain residual charge from the control board capacitors. Leave unplugged for 10 minutes. Plug back in and start a Spin Only programme immediately.

E23 caused by a one-off electrical spike or temporary relay fault will clear with a full discharge and not recur. If E23 returns on the very first attempt, proceed immediately to wiring and pump inspection — the fault is persistent.
Clean the pump filter as a baseline

Open the bottom front access flap with a tray and towels in place. Slowly unscrew the filter cap to drain water. Remove and clean the filter thoroughly. A severely blocked filter forces the pump motor to draw far above its design current, which the board protection circuit can register as an electrical fault.

Unplug the machine before opening the filter access area. The pump motor can activate without warning if power is present.
Inspect the pump wiring connector

With the machine completely unplugged, tilt it onto its back or remove the lower access panel to expose the drain pump. The pump has a multi-pin wiring connector. Disconnect it and inspect both sides for corrosion, green or white deposits, burnt insulation, or pins pushed back out of position. Reconnect firmly until it clicks.

Never work on internal wiring with the machine plugged in. Pump wiring carries 230 V mains voltage during operation and contact would cause electrocution.
Test the pump motor resistance

With the machine unplugged and the pump connector disconnected, set a multimeter to resistance mode. Test across the pump motor terminals. A functioning Zanussi drain pump motor typically reads between 150 and 300 ohms. A reading of OL (open circuit) means the motor winding has failed internally. A reading of zero or near zero indicates a short circuit. Either confirms the pump must be replaced.

Record the exact resistance reading before ordering a replacement. Some Zanussi models use pumps with different winding values — confirm the reading is outside the expected range rather than replacing based on assumption alone.
Test between pump terminals and machine earth

With the pump connector still disconnected, test between each pump terminal and the machine earth point. Any reading other than OL indicates the motor winding has broken down to earth — a serious fault that means the machine must not be used until the pump is replaced.

An earth fault in the pump motor means live voltage may be present on the machine body during operation. This is a shock risk. Keep the machine unplugged until repaired.
Inspect the control board pump relay

If the pump motor and all wiring test correctly, a relay on the control board that drives the pump circuit may have failed. This prevents current from reaching the pump or causes continuous abnormal current draw that the protection circuit flags as E23. Board-level relay testing requires specialist diagnostic equipment.

Do not attempt to power the control board outside the machine or probe live connections. Control boards must only be tested by a qualified appliance engineer.

When to call an engineer

  • Pump motor reads open circuit or short circuit on a multimeter — motor must be replaced
  • Earth fault confirmed between pump terminal and machine earth — do not use the machine until repaired
  • E23 persists after pump replacement and wiring inspection — control board relay fault suspected
  • Wiring harness to the pump is burnt through, corroded, or the connector housing has melted
Common questions

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between E20 and E23 on a Zanussi washing machine?
E20 means the machine failed to drain — a physical blockage or pump failure prevented water from leaving. E23 means the control board detected an electrical problem in the drain pump circuit itself, such as a short circuit, open circuit, or abnormal current draw.
Can a blocked filter cause E23?
Yes — a severely blocked filter forces the pump motor to work far beyond its design current. The board electrical protection circuit can interpret this excessive current draw as an electrical fault, producing E23 rather than E20.
Is E23 something I can investigate at home?
Basic checks such as cleaning the filter, inspecting the wiring connector, and performing a full power reset are safe to carry out. Multimeter testing of the pump motor requires some technical knowledge. Board-level diagnosis should be carried out by a qualified engineer.
Can E23 mean the control board has failed?
Yes — if the pump motor and all wiring test correctly, a failed relay on the control board is the remaining cause. Control board faults typically require a specialist diagnostic tool to confirm before replacement.
