The F05 error is a drainage fault. Your Whirlpool washing machine monitors how long it takes to empty the drum after a wash or rinse. If the water level has not dropped sufficiently within the expected time window, the machine stops and displays F05 to protect itself and your home. This is one of the most frequently occurring Whirlpool error codes and, reassuringly, it is also one of the most straightforward to fix without any tools or technical knowledge. The vast majority of F05 faults are caused by a blocked or dirty pump filter (the small round access panel at the front bottom of the machine), a kinked or obstructed drain hose, or a blockage in the household waste pipe or sink trap that the machine drains into. In a minority of cases, the drain pump motor itself may be failing. Always start with the filter — it is blocked in the overwhelming majority of F05 cases.

How to fix it
Switch the washing machine off at the wall and unplug it. Pull the machine forward to access the back. Lay old towels on the floor around both the front and back of the machine — draining the filter can release a surprisingly large amount of water.
The pump filter on Whirlpool front-load washing machines is located at the bottom front of the machine, usually behind a rectangular plastic flap that can be prised open with a flat-head screwdriver or fingernail. Inside you will find a round plastic filter cap, and many models also have a small emergency drain hose with a removable stopper.
Position a shallow tray directly under the filter cap. If using the emergency drain hose, empty and re-empty the tray until nothing more comes out. Then slowly unscrew the filter cap anticlockwise by a quarter turn at a time to release any remaining water gradually. Fully remove the cap and rinse it thoroughly under a tap. Shine a torch into the filter housing and remove any debris inside the cavity.
Go to the back of the machine and follow the corrugated drain hose from the machine to the standpipe or waste pipe connection. Check the entire length for kinks, sharp bends, and crush damage — especially where the hose passes behind the machine. If the hose is connected to a standpipe, check that it is not inserted more than 15 cm into the pipe. If it is too deep, the resulting siphoning effect causes the machine to drain and refill continuously, eventually triggering F05.
If the drain hose connects to the same waste pipe as your kitchen sink, run the sink and check that the water flows away freely. A partially blocked sink trap is a common hidden cause of F05 — the machine tries to drain but the water backs up into the hose. Remove and clean the sink trap if drainage is slow.
Screw the filter cap back in clockwise until hand-tight. Close the access flap. Plug the machine back in and run a short spin-only or rinse-and-spin programme. Watch the machine during the drain phase to confirm water flows away cleanly and F05 does not return.
