What this error means

Water inlet fault — the dishwasher is not filling with water correctly

The F12 error on a Miele dishwasher means the machine has failed to receive sufficient water during the fill phase. This is most commonly caused by a closed or partially open water supply tap, a kinked inlet hose, a blocked inlet filter mesh, or the Miele Waterproof safety inlet hose having activated its internal shutoff. Low water pressure and a failed inlet valve solenoid will also produce F12.

Step-by-step

1
Locate the water supply tap under the sink and confirm it is turned fully anti-clockwise to the open position
Miele dishwashers require a minimum of 1 bar supply pressure and a partly open tap reliably triggers F12
2
Inspect the inlet hose — on Miele dishwashers this is often a Waterproof safety hose with a double-walled construction
Check the outer sleeve for any signs of dampness or swelling which would indicate the inner hose has split and the safety shutoff has activated
3
Trace the hose from the tap to the back of the dishwasher straightening all kinks and bends
4
Turn the tap off, disconnect the inlet hose from the machine and clean the small mesh filter inside the inlet port under running water

Symptoms to look for

  1. Dishwasher starts but does not fill with water
  2. F12 displayed within the first 2 minutes of a programme
  3. No sound of water entering the machine at any point during the fill phase
  4. Miele Waterproof inlet hose outer sleeve is wet or swollen

How to fix it

Time 20–35 minutes
Skill Anyone
Confirm the tap is fully open

Find the cold water isolation tap under the sink. Turn it fully anti-clockwise. If uncertain whether it moved, close it fully then reopen.

Have a towel ready before loosening any hose fittings. Water escapes under pressure when the seal is broken.
Inspect the Miele Waterproof inlet hose

Miele dishwashers typically use a Waterproof safety inlet hose — a double-walled hose with an internal shutoff valve that activates automatically if the inner hose splits. Examine the outer plastic sleeve along its full length for any bulging, dampness, or discolouration.

If the outer sleeve is wet or swollen the internal hose has split and the safety valve has activated. The complete Miele Waterproof inlet hose must be replaced as an assembly — do not attempt to repair it. A genuine Miele Waterproof hose is required — standard replacement hoses do not have the built-in safety shutoff.
Clean the inlet filter mesh

Turn the tap off. Disconnect the inlet hose from the back of the machine. Inside the inlet port is a small flat mesh filter. Remove with tweezers, rinse under running water and scrub with a toothbrush to clear limescale. Refit firmly.

Never run the dishwasher without the inlet filter. It protects the Miele inlet valve from grit that would damage the precision valve seat.
Test the supply pressure

Disconnect the hose and briefly open the tap into a bucket for 3 seconds. You should see a strong, uninterrupted flow. Miele dishwashers require a minimum of 1 bar.

On a 1-litre jug test the tap should fill it in under 6 seconds. If it takes longer the supply pressure is below the Miele minimum.
Inspect the inlet valve

With the dishwasher completely unplugged, remove the lower kickplate panel. The inlet valve is where the hose connects internally. Check the solenoid coil for corrosion or burn marks. Test the coil resistance — a healthy Miele dishwasher inlet valve coil typically reads between 200 and 1,500 ohms. OL (open circuit) means the coil has failed.

Only access the valve with the dishwasher fully unplugged.
Run a test cycle

Reassemble everything and run a Quick Intensive programme. The machine should begin filling within 60 seconds with a clearly audible water entry sound.

The Miele display shows fill progress during the programme — the fill indicator should advance steadily without stalling.

When to call an engineer

  • Miele Waterproof inlet hose safety valve has activated — complete genuine Miele hose replacement required
  • Inlet valve solenoid reads open circuit on a multimeter — valve needs replacing
  • Water supply pressure confirmed below 1 bar — plumbing issue
  • Inlet filter is completely blocked with limescale that cannot be cleared by scrubbing alone
Common questions

Frequently asked questions

What is the Miele Waterproof inlet hose?
The Waterproof inlet hose has a double-wall construction with an automatic internal shutoff valve. If the inner hose splits or leaks, water collects in the outer sleeve and triggers the shutoff, preventing any further water from reaching the machine. F12 results because the dishwasher cannot fill.
Can I reset the Miele Waterproof hose shutoff?
No — the Waterproof hose shutoff is a one-shot safety device. Once activated the complete hose assembly must be replaced with a genuine Miele Waterproof replacement hose.
What minimum water pressure does a Miele dishwasher need?
Miele specifies a minimum of 1 bar for reliable dishwasher operation — higher than many other brands.
Is it safe to use the dishwasher after F12?
Not until the cause is resolved. Without adequate water the machine cannot wash, rinse, or safely manage its heating element temperature.
