What this error means
The F2 error code on your Whirlpool dishwasher means the machine cannot drain the water away — the dishwasher has detected that water is not leaving the sump at the expected rate and has stopped the cycle as a safety precaution.
The F2 error is a drainage failure. At several points during a dishwasher cycle — most notably at the end of the wash and rinse phases — the machine pumps water out through the drain pump and into your household waste pipe. If the dishwasher detects that the water level is not dropping as expected within the allotted time, it stops and displays F2 to prevent the machine from overflowing or attempting to run subsequent phases with a full sump. The most common causes are a blocked filter assembly at the bottom of the dishwasher (the most frequent culprit by far), a kinked or blocked drain hose, a blockage further along the shared household waste pipe or sink trap, or in a minority of cases a failing drain pump motor. In most households F2 can be resolved in under 15 minutes by cleaning the filter — this is always the first step and fixes the problem the majority of the time.
Step-by-step
Symptoms to look for
- F2 displayed on the control panel
- Standing water visible at the bottom of the dishwasher after a cycle
- Dishwasher stopping mid-cycle and refusing to continue
- Dishes not being cleaned properly due to incomplete cycle
- Gurgling or buzzing sound from the base of the machine during the drain phase
How to fix it
Switch the dishwasher off and remove the plug from the wall socket. Open the door fully and remove the lower basket to give yourself clear access to the floor of the machine. Have a few sheets of kitchen paper or a small cloth ready for mopping up any residual water in the sump.
Whirlpool dishwashers use a two-part filter system. The upper cylindrical filter twists anticlockwise approximately a quarter turn and then lifts free. Beneath it sits a flat, coarse mesh plate that lifts straight out. Take both to the kitchen sink and rinse them thoroughly under running water. Use an old toothbrush or soft nail brush to work through the mesh of the cylindrical filter — pay particular attention to the bottom of the mesh where grease and fine food particles accumulate.
With the filters removed, shine a torch into the sump (the recessed area in the floor of the machine). Check for food debris, broken glass, fruit stones, labels from jars, or other items that may have passed through the filter and are now sitting in the pump inlet. Remove anything you find with your fingers or a cloth — wear rubber gloves to protect against sharp fragments.
Go to the back of the dishwasher and trace the drain hose from the machine to its connection point (either a standpipe, a connection under the sink, or a spigot on the sink waste pipe). Check the full length for kinks, sharp bends, or points where the hose is pinched between the machine and a cabinet. At the standpipe or waste connection, confirm the hose end is not inserted more than 15 cm — excessive insertion creates a siphoning effect that causes the machine to drain and refill continuously, which can trigger F2.
If the dishwasher drain hose connects to the same waste pipe as your kitchen sink, run the sink tap and observe whether water flows away freely. A slow or blocked sink trap can prevent the dishwasher from draining, causing F2. Remove and clean the sink trap if it is slow.
Refit the flat filter first, then twist the cylindrical filter back into place clockwise until it clicks or locks firmly. Replace the lower basket. Plug the machine back in and run a short rinse-only programme. Watch the machine through the drain phase — water should pump away cleanly and the machine should proceed to the next stage without showing F2.
When to call an engineer
- F2 returns after cleaning filter and checking hose and waste pipe
- Drain pump making loud buzzing but not moving water
- No blockage found in filter or hose but machine still will not drain
- Pump impeller found to be cracked or seized on inspection
- Wiring fault suspected on drain pump circuit
