What this error means

Water in base — the machine has detected water in the base tray, indicating an internal leak.

The E30 error on a Zanussi washing machine means the anti-flood float switch in the machine base tray has been activated. Every Zanussi washing machine has a shallow plastic tray in its base that collects water from any internal leak. A float switch sits in this tray and triggers E30 as soon as water is detected. This is a safety-critical fault designed to prevent flooding. The most common causes are a leaking door seal, a loose or cracked internal hose connection, excessive detergent foam overflowing from the drum, a leaking drum bearing seal, or a cracked outer drum. The machine will remain locked out until the water in the base tray is physically removed.

Step-by-step

1
Unplug the machine from the mains immediately
E30 is a safety-critical fault and the machine must be completely de-powered before any investigation is carried out
2
Do not attempt to start any programme
The anti-flood system is active and the machine will refuse to operate normally until the base tray is confirmed completely dry
3
Tilt the machine carefully backwards by approximately 45 degrees with assistance
This allows water in the base tray to drain towards the rear ventilation openings and out onto the floor, which resets the float switch
4
Place towels behind the machine before tilting and allow the base to dry thoroughly
Do not attempt to run the machine again until the source of the leak has been identified

Symptoms to look for

  1. E30 displayed at any point during a programme
  2. Machine refuses to start any programme after E30 has appeared
  3. Water visible on the floor beneath the machine
  4. Smell of damp or mildew from beneath or behind the machine

Diagnostic steps

Unplug and prepare safely

Disconnect the machine from the mains power immediately. E30 means water is present inside the electrical base of the machine, in close proximity to the motor, wiring harness, and control board. Investigating or attempting to use the machine while powered is a serious electrocution risk.

Do not reach under the machine to feel for water with it plugged in. The base tray water may be in contact with motor connections or the control board. Always unplug first, without exception.
Drain the base tray by tilting the machine

With the machine unplugged and the water supply turned off, pull the machine forward from the wall. With a second person assisting, tilt it carefully backwards at approximately 45 degrees. Hold this position for 30 to 60 seconds to allow water in the base tray to run towards the rear ventilation openings and out onto the floor. Place towels behind the machine before tilting.

Always get assistance before tilting — washing machines are heavy. Tilting alone risks dropping the machine or straining your back. Never tilt with the machine plugged in.
Allow the base to dry fully

After draining by tilting, stand the machine upright and remove the lower access panel or kick strip to allow air to circulate into the base. If possible, direct a hair dryer on a cool, low setting into the base for five to ten minutes. The float switch must be completely dry before E30 will clear.

Even a few drops of water remaining on or near the float switch will keep E30 active. Full drying is essential before attempting a test programme.
Check the detergent type and quantity

Excessive foam from too much detergent, non-HE detergent, or the wrong product for your machine overflows during the wash phase and drips into the base tray without any hose or seal failure. This is one of the most common causes of E30 in otherwise healthy machines. Confirm you are using the correct detergent in the correct quantity for your water hardness.

Zanussi front-loading machines are high-efficiency designs requiring low-foam, HE-rated detergent. Using standard non-HE powder or liquid will consistently overproduce foam and is a frequent cause of repeated E30 faults.
Run a leak identification test

With the base dry and E30 cleared, restore power and water and run a Cotton 30-degree programme. Observe the machine throughout the full cycle, watching particularly around the door seal, the detergent drawer, and beneath the machine during the drain phase.

Keep your face and body clear of water spray during the test. Internal hose connections can release water at pressure if they have failed. Maintain a safe distance and stop the machine immediately if a leak is visible.
Inspect the base tray and float switch

With the machine unplugged and tilted or on its side, remove the base cover panel to view the tray and float switch directly. The float arm should be in the lowered, resting position with the tray completely dry. Confirm the arm moves freely with no debris or wire holding it raised.

If the base tray is bone dry but E30 persists after a full reset, the float switch has failed in the triggered position. The switch body and wiring connector should be inspected and replaced.

When to call an engineer

  • Drum bearing seal is leaking — water marks visible at the rear of the drum when the machine is tilted
  • Door seal is visibly cracked, torn, or has holes — must be replaced before the machine is used again
  • Outer drum tub has a crack or fracture — requires specialist assessment and repair
  • E30 persists with the base completely dry — float switch has failed in the triggered position
Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Is E30 dangerous?
Yes — water inside the machine base is in close proximity to electrical wiring, the motor, and control board. Never attempt to use the machine or investigate the base with it plugged in. Always unplug from the mains first.
Why does E30 keep returning on my Zanussi washing machine?
Repeated E30 always indicates a recurring internal leak. Common ongoing causes include a door seal that is beginning to perish, a worn drum bearing seal, or consistently using too much or the wrong type of detergent. The source of the leak must be identified and resolved.
Can using too much detergent cause E30?
Yes — excessive foam overflows from the drum during the wash phase and drips into the base tray, triggering the float switch. Reduce detergent quantity and use only HE-rated products suitable for front-loading machines.
How do I reset E30 after drying the base?
Tilt the machine backwards to drain the float switch area, leave to dry thoroughly with the kick strip removed, then unplug for 10 minutes and plug back in. The E30 code will clear automatically once the float switch returns to its resting position.
