What this error means

Drain fault — the washing machine cannot empty water from the drum

The 5E error means the machine failed to drain within the expected time. On Samsung washing machines this is most often caused by a blocked pump filter, a kinked or obstructed drain hose, or a foreign object jamming the pump impeller. A failing drain pump motor will also produce this fault.

Step-by-step

1
Unplug the machine before doing anything
Open the small access flap at the bottom front of the machine, place a towel and shallow tray underneath, and slowly turn the filter cap anti-clockwise to release trapped water in a controlled way
2
Unscrew the filter cap fully and remove it
Clear coins, hair, lint, or any debris from both the filter and the housing cavity
3
Check the drain hose at the rear for kinks, and ensure the end in the standpipe is no more than 15 cm deep
4
Refit the filter firmly, plug back in and run a Spin or Drain programme to test
Diagnostic

Symptoms to look for

  1. Water visible in the drum at the end of a cycle
  2. Machine stops mid-programme with water remaining
  3. Straining or loud humming from the pump area during draining
  4. 5E displayed near the end of a wash or rinse phase

How to fix it

Time 20–40 minutes

Prepare for water spillage

Unplug the machine. Lay towels on the floor and get a shallow tray ready — even after a failed drain there can be 3 to 5 litres trapped inside.

Never remove the pump filter with the machine plugged in. The pump can activate unexpectedly, releasing a sudden burst of hot water.
Access and drain through the filter

At the bottom front of the machine, open the small flap or kick-strip panel. Place your tray under the round filter cap. Turn it anti-clockwise by a quarter turn only to release water as a controlled trickle. Empty the tray as needed, then unscrew the cap fully and pull out the filter. The machine may be equipped with an emergency drain hose next to the filter to aid in removing the water in a more controlled way.

Samsung machines stopped mid-wash retain hot water. Allow a few minutes to cool before draining if possible.
Clean the filter and housing

Rinse the filter under warm running water, scrubbing the mesh with an old toothbrush. Then reach carefully into the housing cavity and feel around the pump entrance for debris.

Feel slowly — sharp objects such as coins, hair grips, and broken glass can reach the pump housing and cause cuts.
Check the pump impeller

Shine a torch into the filter cavity. At the back you should see the impeller — a small plastic fan. Try to rotate it gently with one finger. It should spin freely with light resistance. If stiff or completely seized there is a blockage in the pump body or a broken impeller blade.

A thin sock or small garment wrapped around the impeller is one of the most common causes of 5E — it will not be visible from the filter side and may require the pump to be removed.
Inspect the drain hose

Trace the corrugated drain hose to the standpipe or sink. Straighten all kinks. The hose end should be inserted no more than 15 cm into the standpipe and not sealed against the pipe walls. The lowest point of the hose must be at least 60 cm from the floor.

A hose sealed too deeply creates a continuous syphon that tries to drain the machine during filling — this also triggers repeated 5E codes over time.
Run a drain programme

Refit the filter firmly clockwise. Plug in and select Spin Only. You should hear the pump activate within seconds and water should flow from the drain hose.

If the pump hums loudly but no water moves, there is still a blockage in the pump body requiring the pump to be removed.

When to call an engineer

  • Pump impeller cracked or will not turn by hand after filter removal
  • Pump hums but produces no water movement — motor winding has failed
  • 5E returns immediately after filter cleaning and hose check
  • Burning smell or scorch marks in the pump area
Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Can I drain the drum manually when 5E stops the machine mid-cycle?
Yes — unplug, place a tray under the filter panel, and very slowly unscrew the filter cap to drain water in a controlled flow.
How often should I clean the Samsung pump filter?
Every 1 to 3 months. Samsung recommends checking it monthly if you wash heavily soiled items or pet bedding regularly.
Why does 5E appear even though I cleaned the filter last week?
A foreign object may have passed the filter and jammed the impeller, or the drain hose has developed a new kink. Check both before assuming the pump has failed.
Could a blocked filter permanently damage the pump?
Yes — running repeatedly with a blocked filter overloads the pump motor and can burn it out. Always clear 5E before running another cycle.
