What this error means

Door fault — the door is not fully closed or the door lock has not engaged

The dE error means the machine cannot confirm the door is securely closed and locked. This prevents the cycle from starting or continuing. It is most commonly caused by the door not being pushed fully shut, debris in the door seal preventing closure, a worn latch hook, or a faulty door interlock switch. On Samsung machines dE can also appear if the child lock has been accidentally activated.

Step-by-step

1
Push the door firmly shut using both hands on the outer plastic frame until you hear a definite click
Never push on the glass
2
Check the rubber door seal all the way around for trapped clothing, coins, or any debris preventing the door from sitting flush
3
Check that the child lock has not been activated
On most Samsung models hold the Temperature and Spin buttons simultaneously for 3 seconds to deactivate it
4
Unplug the machine, wait 60 seconds, then plug back in to reset the door lock circuit

Symptoms to look for

  1. Door will not lock at the start of a programme
  2. Machine starts then stops immediately with dE displayed
  3. Cycle pauses mid-wash with a door fault
  4. Door appears closed but machine will not begin

Diagnostic steps

Check the door is fully closed

Press the door firmly with both hands on the outer plastic frame. You should hear and feel a solid click as the latch snaps into the catch plate on the machine body. The door face should sit completely flush.

If the door springs back slightly when you release it, something is preventing it from seating fully — inspect the seal and the latch carefully before applying more force.
Check the child lock status

Samsung washing machines have a child lock that disables all controls including door release. The dE code can appear in combination with a child lock activation. Check your model's manual for the exact button combination — commonly Temperature and Spin held for 3 seconds, or the child lock button if one is present. A padlock icon on the display confirms the child lock is active.

The child lock indicator is sometimes small and easy to miss on the display panel.
Inspect the door seal for obstructions

Run your fingers slowly around the full circumference of the rubber door seal, pressing into the folds. Feel for trapped clothing, coins, hair grips, or any debris. Remove anything found. Pay close attention to the lower section of the seal.

Do not force the door closed if you feel resistance — identify and remove the obstruction first. Forcing a door with a coin lodged in the seal can crack the door glass or damage the latch mechanism.
Examine the door latch and catch plate

Open the door and inspect the plastic latch hook on the door edge — it must be intact with no cracks, chips, or visible bending. Examine the catch plate slot on the machine body. Both must be undamaged and properly aligned.

A cracked or bent latch hook must be replaced before running the machine. A door that appears closed but has a damaged latch can open under spin pressure.
Inspect the door interlock switch

With the machine unplugged, look into the catch plate opening on the machine body. The interlock switch is the small mechanism inside. Check it is not obstructed, discoloured, or showing signs of burning.

Always unplug the machine before inspecting internal electrical components. The door interlock carries mains voltage during operation.
Perform a full power reset

Unplug the machine and hold the power button for 5 seconds to discharge the control board. Leave unplugged for 60 seconds. Plug back in and try a short programme.

Samsung control boards sometimes latch a dE code after a power interruption mid-cycle. A full power discharge clears this without any physical fault being present.

When to call an engineer

  • Door interlock switch fails a continuity test with a multimeter
  • Door latch hook is visibly cracked, bent, or broken
  • Door hangs lower than normal — hinge is worn or damaged
  • Wiring to the door interlock is burnt or the connector has melted
Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Is dE dangerous?
The fault itself is not dangerous, but never try to force the door open or run the machine while dE is active. The door could open under drum pressure during a spin cycle.
What is the Samsung child lock and how do I turn it off?
The child lock disables all control buttons and prevents the door from being opened during a cycle. Hold the Temperature and Spin buttons simultaneously for 3 seconds, or refer to your model's user guide for the exact combination.
Why does dE appear mid-cycle rather than at the start?
The interlock switch is losing contact during vibration, which means it is wearing out. The fault will become more frequent until the switch is replaced.
Will the drum drain before the door unlocks after a dE fault?
Yes — Samsung machines complete a drain before releasing the door lock. If the door stays locked after unplugging, wait 2 minutes for the solenoid to release.
