What this error means

Water supply fault — the washing machine is not filling with water correctly

The 4E error means the machine has failed to detect sufficient water entering within the allowed fill time. On Samsung washing machines this is most commonly caused by a closed or partially open water tap, a kinked inlet hose, a blocked inlet filter mesh, or low water pressure at the property. A faulty solenoid inlet valve can also produce this code.

Step-by-step

1
Locate the water supply tap on the wall behind or under the machine and confirm it is turned fully anti-clockwise to the open position
2
Pull the machine slightly forward and trace the inlet hose along its full length
Straighten any kinks or tight bends
3
Turn the tap off, unscrew the inlet hose from the back of the machine and inspect the small mesh filter inside the inlet port
Clean it under running water if blocked
4
Reconnect the hose securely, turn the tap fully on and run a Quick Wash to test

Symptoms to look for

  1. Machine pauses immediately after starting without taking on water
  2. Programme runs but takes far longer than the display estimate
  3. 4E displayed within the first 2 to 3 minutes of a programme
  4. Drum feels dry after 5 minutes of a programme

How to fix it

Time 20–35 minutes
Skill Anyone
Confirm the water tap is fully open

Find the cold water isolation tap behind or under the machine. It is usually a quarter-turn lever or straight-slot screw valve. Turn it fully anti-clockwise. If unsure whether it moved, close it fully then reopen fully.

Water is under mains pressure at the supply tap. Have a towel ready before loosening any hose fittings — water escapes immediately when the seal is broken.
Straighten the inlet hose

Hold the machine body and pull it carefully forward — never drag by the hose. Run your hand along the full hose length and straighten every kink or compressed bend. Push the machine back while watching to ensure it does not kink behind the cabinet.

If the hose kinks repeatedly when the machine is pushed back, fit a 90-degree inlet elbow at the machine connection. This is a low-cost part that permanently resolves recurring hose kinking.
Clean the inlet filter mesh

Turn the tap off fully. Fold a towel under the hose connection at the back of the machine. Unscrew the hose fitting anti-clockwise — water will drip out as you loosen it. Inside the machine's inlet port is a small flat or cylindrical mesh filter. Remove it with tweezers, rinse under running water and scrub gently with an old toothbrush to remove limescale and debris. Push it firmly back in, reattach the hose and hand-tighten plus a quarter turn with pliers.

Never run the machine without the inlet filter. It protects the inlet valve from grit and fine debris that would permanently damage the valve seat.
Check the water supply pressure

With the hose disconnected from the machine, point the open end into a bucket and briefly open the tap for 3 seconds. You should see a strong, steady, uninterrupted flow. A weak trickle means a supply pressure issue at the property — contact your water supplier.

Samsung washing machines require a minimum water pressure of 0.5 bar to fill correctly. Pressure below this will trigger 4E even with a fully open tap and clean filter.
Inspect the inlet valve

With the machine completely unplugged and water off, remove the rear panel. The inlet valve is where the hose connects internally — a solenoid body with one or two coils. Check for corrosion, cracking, or mineral build-up around the valve.

Only access the inlet valve with the machine fully unplugged. The solenoid coil carries mains voltage when energised.
Run a test fill

Reassemble, turn water on fully and start a Cotton 40-degree programme. Watch the first 3 minutes — you should hear water entering and the programme display should begin counting.

Samsung machines on newer models display a fill progress bar — if it fills very slowly but completes, the filter needs a deeper clean with a descaling tablet run through an empty cycle.

When to call an engineer

  • Water supply pressure confirmed adequate but 4E persists after filter cleaning
  • Inlet valve solenoid coil reads open circuit on a multimeter
  • Valve not opening despite receiving power — confirmed by multimeter testing
  • Wiring to inlet valve is burnt, corroded, or connector is melted
Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Why does 4E appear even though the tap is connected?
The flow rate may be too slow rather than absent. A partially closed tap or partially blocked filter restricts flow enough to trigger the fill timeout even when some water is present.
Can limescale cause 4E on a Samsung?
Yes — limescale accumulates in the filter mesh and inlet valve seat, narrowing the water path. Clean the filter every 3 months and descale every 3 to 6 months in hard water areas.
What is the minimum water pressure a Samsung washing machine needs?
Samsung specifies a minimum of 0.5 bar and a maximum of 8 bar. Pressure below 0.5 bar will cause 4E even with a fully open tap.
Is it safe to run the machine after 4E?
Not until the cause is resolved. Without sufficient water the machine cannot wash, rinse, or safely cool its heating element.
