The LE error on LG washing machines indicates that the motor's rotor has become locked — it is being commanded to rotate but cannot move. LG machines use Direct Drive motors attached directly to the drum, so there is no drive belt to check. LE is most commonly caused by an overloaded drum, a foreign object jammed between the drum and the outer tub, worn motor Hall sensor, or a motor winding fault. Allow the motor thermal cutout to reset

Unplug the machine and leave the door open for a minimum of 15 minutes. The Direct Drive motor's internal thermal protection requires complete cooling before it will reset. Plug back in and try a Spin Only cycle with an empty drum.

If LE only appears after a long programme and clears after cooling, the motor is overheating under load — this indicates a developing motor fault or a Hall sensor issue causing inefficient control that will worsen over time.
Check drum rotation by hand

With the machine unplugged, place your hand inside the drum and rotate it slowly clockwise for a full turn then anti-clockwise. Resistance should be smooth and consistent throughout. Any grinding, sharp catching, or complete seizure indicates a physical obstruction or a mechanical fault.

Do not force a seized drum. LG Direct Drive motors are bolted directly to the drum shaft — forcing a seized drum can crack the rotor, strip the shaft spline, or damage the stator windings.
Check for items trapped between drum and outer tub

Shine a torch through the drum perforations and look carefully into the gap between the drum and the outer tub. Coins, underwires, small toys, and label clips frequently pass through drum holes and jam in this space. Use long-nose pliers or a flexible grabber to retrieve visible objects.

Use a torch before inserting any tool. Sharp trapped objects can cause cuts. Do not use metal tools that could scratch the drum surface.
Access the motor rotor

With the machine unplugged, remove the rear panel by undoing the screws around its edge. On LG Direct Drive machines the rotor is the large disc bolted to the back of the drum — it has visible permanent magnets on its inner face. Check that the rotor retaining bolt in the centre is tight. A loose rotor causes the motor to behave erratically and can produce LE.

Wait 60 seconds after unplugging before touching any motor connections. The stator contains coils that can retain a small charge.
Inspect the Hall sensor

The Hall effect sensor is mounted on the stator body — the fixed ring at the rear of the machine. It is connected by a thin multi-wire harness. Check the connector is fully seated and the harness is not chafed or pinched by the drum or cabinet.

A loose or failed Hall sensor is a very common cause of LE on LG Direct Drive machines. The sensor is a low-cost part and is one of the more straightforward repairs on these models.
Check the stator wiring

Inspect the wiring from the stator coils to the main harness connector. Look for chafed insulation, burnt sections, or a multi-pin connector that is not fully engaged. Disconnect and firmly reconnect the stator harness connector.

Confirm the machine is completely unplugged before touching any stator wiring.
