What this error means

Motor fault — the motor control system has detected a fault in the drive motor

The CE error on LG washing machines indicates the motor control system has detected an overcurrent, undercurrent, or other abnormal condition in the motor circuit. On LG Direct Drive machines this commonly relates to the motor coil resistance being outside the expected range, a faulty Hall sensor producing incorrect speed signals, or a wiring fault between the inverter board and the motor stator. A failed inverter (motor control) board can also produce CE.

Step-by-step

1
Unplug the machine and wait 10 minutes
The motor control system requires a complete power discharge to reset after detecting an abnormal current condition
2
Remove the entire load and try an empty Spin Only cycle
An overloaded drum causes the motor to draw excess current which triggers CE even on healthy motors
3
Open the door and rotate the drum slowly by hand
Smooth resistance in both directions confirms no mechanical obstruction is causing the motor to stall
4
Plug back in and start the empty spin immediately without leaving the machine on standby
Some LG models require a cold start to reinitialise the inverter board
Diagnostic

Symptoms to look for

  1. Machine starts a spin or wash cycle then stops immediately with CE
  2. Drum rotates briefly then stops with a buzzing sound
  3. CE appears during the spin phase but not during slow wash tumbling
  4. Machine works intermittently — sometimes completing cycles normally, sometimes showing CE

Diagnostic steps

Time 40–75 minutes

Allow a full power discharge

Unplug the machine and hold the power button for 10 seconds to drain residual charge from the inverter board capacitors. Leave unplugged for 10 minutes. Plug back in and try an empty Spin Only cycle immediately.

CE caused by a temporary current spike or a one-off inverter board error will clear with a full discharge and not recur. If CE returns on the first spin after reset, proceed to physical inspection.
Check drum rotation by hand

With the machine unplugged, rotate the drum slowly by hand in both directions. Smooth, even resistance confirms no physical obstruction. Grinding, catching, or seizure indicates a mechanical fault causing the motor to stall and draw excess current.

Do not force a seized drum on an LG Direct Drive machine. The motor is bolted directly to the drum shaft and forcing against a seized bearing can crack the rotor or damage the stator.
Access the motor assembly

With the machine unplugged, remove the rear panel. On LG Direct Drive machines the motor consists of a rotor (the large disc at the rear of the drum) and a stator (the fixed ring behind it). Check that the central rotor retaining bolt is tight — a loose rotor causes erratic current readings and can produce CE.

Wait 60 seconds after unplugging before touching motor connections. Stator coils can retain a small residual charge.
Check the Hall sensor

The Hall sensor is mounted on the stator body and connected by a thin multi-pin harness. Inspect the harness connector — it must be fully and firmly seated. A loose or corroded Hall sensor connector is one of the most common causes of CE on LG Direct Drive machines. Disconnect and firmly reconnect the connector.

Clean any green or white deposits on the connector pins with a dry cotton bud before reseating.
Inspect the inverter board wiring

The inverter (motor control) board is typically mounted near the motor at the lower rear of the machine. Check the wiring connectors between the inverter board and the stator, and between the inverter board and the main control board. Disconnect and firmly reseat each connector. Look for burnt insulation, corrosion, or chafed wires.

Do not test any inverter board connections with the machine powered. The inverter board operates at high voltage.
Test motor stator resistance

With the machine unplugged and all connectors disconnected from the stator, test the resistance between the stator winding terminals using a multimeter. Consult the service documentation for your specific LG model for the expected resistance value — typically between 3 and 10 ohms per winding. An open circuit or short circuit reading indicates a failed stator winding.

Only perform resistance testing with the machine completely unplugged.

When to call an engineer

  • Hall sensor reads no signal after connector reseating — sensor has failed
  • Stator winding reads open circuit or short to earth — motor needs replacing
  • Inverter board shows visible burn damage or CE persists after all connections reseated
  • Rotor retaining bolt is loose — rotor is moving on the drum shaft
Common questions

Frequently asked questions

What is the inverter board on an LG washing machine?
The inverter board (also called the motor control board or IPM board) converts the mains supply into the variable-frequency power needed to control the Direct Drive motor speed. CE often indicates this board has detected an abnormal condition in the motor circuit.
Can an overloaded drum cause CE on an LG machine?
Yes — excessive mechanical load causes the motor to draw a higher current than the inverter board permits, triggering CE. Always try an empty spin first before investigating components.
Is CE the same as LE on an LG washing machine?
Both relate to motor faults but LE specifically indicates the rotor is locked — not rotating at all. CE indicates an abnormal current condition which can occur even when the motor is rotating.
Can I replace the inverter board myself?
The inverter board is accessible from the rear panel on most LG models and is replaceable with basic tools. Ensure the machine is completely unplugged before removing the board.
