What this error means
Overfill error — the water level has exceeded the safe maximum
The FE error means the machine has detected that the water level in the drum has risen beyond the permitted maximum. This is a safety-critical fault. The most common causes are a stuck-open inlet valve allowing water to enter uncontrolled, a blocked pressure hose causing the level sensor to under-read and keep filling, or a failed pressure sensor. The machine will attempt an emergency drain when FE appears.

Step-by-step
Symptoms to look for
- Machine continues filling beyond the normal level — water visible above the door seal
- Water escaping from the door seal or detergent drawer during filling
- FE displayed during or immediately after the fill phase
- Machine fills then sits full of water without beginning to tumble
Diagnostic steps
Turn the water supply tap fully off. Leave the machine plugged in for 5 minutes to allow the automatic emergency drain to complete — LG machines activate the drain pump when FE is detected. After 5 minutes, unplug and open the door very slowly.
With the machine unplugged, remove the top panel by undoing the two rear screws. Locate the narrow pressure hose running from the outer drum body up to the pressure sensor. Check its full length for kinks, cracks, or disconnection. Disconnect both ends and blow through it — airflow must be completely free and unobstructed. Clear the drum stub with a cotton bud if blocked with detergent residue.
With the hose disconnected from the sensor and the wiring connector removed, test across the sensor terminals with a multimeter. The sensor should switch between two distinct resistance states as you gently blow into the hose port. A sensor that reads open circuit in all states has failed.
With the machine unplugged and the water supply turned off, remove the rear panel and locate the inlet valve. Reconnect the water supply briefly and watch whether water drips or trickles into the drum even with the machine powered off. Any water entry with the machine unplugged confirms the valve is stuck open and must be replaced.
If the pressure hose, sensor, and inlet valve all test correctly, a relay on the control board may have stuck in the closed position, continuously energising the inlet valve. This requires specialist testing and control board replacement.
After repairs, run a short programme while remaining present for the full fill phase. Confirm the water level stabilises well below the door seal opening.
When to call an engineer
- Inlet valve plunger is stuck open — water enters with machine unplugged and tap on
- Pressure sensor does not switch states when air pressure is applied — sensor has failed
- Pressure hose confirmed clear but overfilling persists — control board relay stuck closed
- All components test correctly but FE returns on every cycle — engineer required
