What this error means

Partial blockage — the machine has detected that the drainage system is restricted but not completely blocked.

The E24 error on a Zanussi washing machine indicates the control board has detected a partial blockage in the drainage system — water is moving but at a significantly reduced rate compared to what the machine expects during a drain phase. This code sits between a slow drain and a complete blockage. The most common causes are a partially blocked pump filter, a section of drain hose that is kinked or compressed, a partially obstructed pump impeller, or a household waste connection that is beginning to block. Unlike E20, the pump is still achieving some drainage but not enough to keep up with the machine's requirements.

Step-by-step

1
Unplug the machine from the mains before starting any work near the pump or filter
This must be done before opening the filter access panel for your safety
2
Open the filter access flap at the bottom front of the machine and place towels and a shallow tray beneath it
Turn the filter cap anti-clockwise by a quarter turn only to release water slowly before unscrewing it fully
3
Remove the filter and clean it under warm running water with a toothbrush, paying close attention to the mesh surface
A build-up of greasy lint across the filter is the most common cause of E24
4
Trace the full length of the drain hose from the machine to the standpipe and straighten any kinks
Confirm the hose end is no deeper than 15 cm into the standpipe and the household waste trap is clear
5
Refit the filter firmly and run a Spin Only programme
The pump should drain freely with a clear, strong flow from the drain hose within 30 seconds of starting

Symptoms to look for

  1. Machine drains but noticeably more slowly than usual
  2. Pump runs for longer than expected before the spin phase begins
  3. Some water remains visible in the drum at the end of a programme
  4. E24 displayed during or at the end of a wash or rinse phase

How to fix it

Time 25–40 minutes
Skill Anyone
Prepare safely with towels and a tray

Unplug the machine. Because E24 indicates a significant restriction, there will be water remaining in the drum and hose. Lay towels across the floor and place a tray directly beneath the filter access flap before opening it.

Never open the filter access panel with the machine plugged in. The pump can activate unexpectedly and will release hot pressurised water without warning.
Access, drain, and clean the pump filter

Open the access flap and position your tray beneath the filter cap. Turn the cap anti-clockwise by a quarter turn to release water slowly. Empty the tray and continue until no more water flows. Unscrew the cap fully and remove the filter. Rinse it under warm water and scrub the mesh thoroughly with a toothbrush. Reach into the housing cavity with a torch and clear debris from around the pump entrance.

Even a greasy film that partially covers the mesh is enough to produce E24. Clean both the filter mesh and the flat face of the filter housing recess — debris also accumulates on the housing seating surface.
Inspect the pump impeller

Shine a torch into the empty filter cavity. Locate the impeller at the back and try to rotate it gently with one finger. It should spin smoothly with light, even resistance. Any stiffness, catching, or grinding indicates a partial obstruction around the impeller blades that is contributing to the restricted flow.

Inspect the cavity carefully with a torch before inserting your finger. Sharp objects including coins, hair grips, and fragments of broken items can reach this area.
Inspect the drain hose for partial restriction

Trace the drain hose from the machine rear to the household waste. Straighten every kink and compressed section. Check the hose end in the standpipe is no more than 15 centimetres deep and is not sealed against the pipe wall. A hose that is fully inserted and sealed prevents air from entering and creates back-pressure during drainage.

A build-up of grease and debris in the household sink waste trap creates the same back-pressure effect as a kinked hose. Remove and rinse the trap if accessible — this is a commonly overlooked cause of E24 that has nothing to do with the machine itself.
Run a Spin test and confirm full drainage

Refit the filter firmly and clockwise. Plug in and run Spin Only. Listen to the pump — it should activate immediately and the drain hose should deliver a strong, uninterrupted flow of water. If the flow sounds weak or intermittent, there is still a partial restriction somewhere in the system that has not been fully cleared.

Time how long the drain phase takes on a Spin programme. A Zanussi machine at correct drainage speed should fully empty the drum within two to three minutes. Significantly longer than this suggests a restriction is still present.

When to call an engineer

  • Pump impeller turns but only with significant stiffness — obstruction inside the pump body that cannot be reached from the filter side
  • E24 persists after filter cleaning, impeller inspection, and drain hose check — pump motor is losing efficiency
  • Pump outlet hose has collapsed internally and restricts flow regardless of external straightening
  • Wiring connector to the pump is corroded or damaged
Common questions

Frequently asked questions

How is E24 different from E20 or E21 on a Zanussi washing machine?
E20 means no drainage — the machine failed to drain at all. E21 means drainage is slow. E24 specifically indicates a partial blockage has been detected by the control board, restricting water flow without stopping it completely. All three are investigated starting with the pump filter.
What causes E24 to appear after a filter that was recently cleaned?
A foreign object such as a coin, hair grip, or piece of fabric may have passed through the drum and partially obstructed the pump impeller since the last clean. Check the impeller rotation directly through the filter cavity.
Can the household drain cause E24?
Yes — a partially blocked sink waste trap or standpipe creates back-pressure that slows drainage enough to trigger E24 even when the machine filter and hose are completely clear. Always check the household drain as part of the investigation.
Is E24 likely to get worse if left?
Yes — a partial blockage typically accumulates further debris over time and will progress to a full drainage failure producing E20. Clear it as soon as possible.
