What this error means

Anti-flood system activated — the machine has detected water in the base tray and has locked out to prevent flooding.

The EF0 error on a Zanussi washing machine means the anti-flood protection system has been triggered. A float switch located in the shallow base tray beneath the machine has detected water and has activated EF0 to halt all operation and prevent a flood. This is a safety-critical fault. The most common causes are a leaking door seal, excessive foam from too much or the wrong type of detergent, a loose or cracked internal hose connection, a leaking pump seal, or a cracked outer drum. The machine will remain locked out completely until the water in the base tray is removed and the tray is confirmed dry.

Step-by-step

1
Unplug the machine from the mains immediately
EF0 is a safety-critical fault and the machine must be completely de-powered before any investigation or tilting is attempted
2
Do not attempt to start any programme or override the lockout
The anti-flood system is active and the machine will refuse to operate until the base tray is confirmed completely dry
3
Tilt the machine carefully backwards by approximately 45 degrees with a second person assisting
This drains the water from the base tray toward the rear ventilation slots, resetting the float switch
4
Place old towels behind the machine before tilting to absorb the water that drains out
Allow the base to dry fully before running the machine again or investigating the source of the leak

Symptoms to look for

  1. EF0 displayed during or immediately after the start of a programme
  2. Machine locks out completely and will not begin or resume any programme
  3. Water visible on the floor beneath or in front of the machine
  4. Smell of damp or detergent from beneath the machine

What to do first

Disconnect the machine from the mains power socket immediately. Water in the base tray is in close proximity to the motor, pump, wiring, and control board. Investigating or attempting to operate the machine while powered is a serious electrocution risk.

Do not attempt to tilt or move the machine with it plugged in. The combination of water in the base and mains power is extremely dangerous. Unplug before doing anything else.
Drain the base tray by tilting the machine

With the machine unplugged and the water supply turned off, pull the machine forward from the wall. With a second person assisting, tilt it carefully backwards at approximately 45 degrees. Hold this position for 30 to 60 seconds to allow water to drain from the tray through the rear ventilation openings onto the floor. Lay towels behind the machine beforehand.

Always get help before tilting — washing machines are heavy and unwieldy. Tilting alone risks dropping the machine or personal injury. Never tilt with the machine plugged in.
Allow the base to dry completely

After draining, stand the machine upright and remove the lower access panel or kick strip to allow air circulation into the base. Use a hair dryer on a cool, low setting directed into the base for several minutes if needed. The float switch must be fully dry before EF0 will clear.

A few drops of water remaining on or near the float switch will keep EF0 active even after the bulk of the water has been removed. Thorough drying is essential — do not skip this step.
Investigate the detergent drawer and dosage

Excessive foam caused by too much detergent, non-HE detergent, or the wrong product overflows during the wash phase and drips into the base tray through internal gaps. This is one of the most common causes of EF0 in fully functional machines. Confirm you are using the correct Zanussi-compatible detergent and the correct dose for your water hardness setting.

If EF0 appeared shortly after switching to a new detergent brand or format, revert to the previous product. Run an empty 60-degree cycle first to clear foam residue from the drum seal and base area.
Run a leak identification test

Once the base is dry and EF0 has cleared, restore power and run a Cotton 40-degree programme. Remain present and watch the machine throughout the full cycle. Check around the door seal during the wash phase, beneath the machine at kickplate level during draining, and around the soap dispenser during filling.

Keep a safe distance during the test. If water appears flowing quickly from beneath the machine at any point, unplug immediately and turn off the water supply before approaching.
Inspect the base tray and float switch directly

With the machine unplugged and tilted or on its back, remove the base cover to view the tray and float switch. The float arm should rest in the lowered position with the tray bone dry. Confirm the arm moves freely up and down with nothing holding it in the raised (triggered) position.

If the base tray is confirmed completely dry but EF0 still appears after a full reset, the float switch has failed in the triggered position. Inspect the switch body and its wiring connector and replace if defective.

When to call an engineer

  • Door seal is visibly split, perished, or torn — must be replaced before the machine is used again
  • Pump seal confirmed leaking — water residue visible around the pump body under the machine
  • Outer drum or base tray has a visible crack or fracture — requires specialist assessment
  • EF0 persists with the base tray completely dry — float switch has failed in the triggered position and must be replaced
Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Is EF0 dangerous?
Yes — water inside the machine base is in close proximity to live electrical components including the motor, pump, and control board. Never use or investigate the machine while it is plugged in when EF0 is active. Always unplug first.
Can too much detergent cause EF0 on a Zanussi washing machine?
Yes — this is one of the most common causes of EF0 in otherwise fully functional machines. Excessive foam overflows the drum during the wash phase and drips into the base tray. Reduce the detergent dose and use only HE-rated products.
How do I reset EF0 after the base has dried?
Tilt the machine to drain the tray, allow the base to dry thoroughly with the kick strip removed, then unplug for 10 minutes and plug back in. EF0 will clear automatically once the float switch returns to its resting position.
Why does EF0 keep coming back on my Zanussi washing machine?
Recurring EF0 always means a recurring internal leak. Common ongoing causes include a perishing door seal, a worn pump seal, a loose internal hose clamp that vibrates free during cycles, or consistent detergent over-dosing. The source of the leak must be found and permanently fixed.
