What this error means

Filter system blockage — the dishwasher filter assembly is blocked and is preventing water from circulating or draining correctly.

The E22 error on a Bosch dishwasher means the control board has detected that the filter system at the base of the tub is sufficiently blocked to affect machine performance. Bosch dishwashers use a multi-stage filter system consisting of a cylindrical coarse filter and a flat fine mesh filter that together prevent food debris from recirculating through the spray arms or reaching the drain pump. When these filters become heavily blocked with compacted food grease, limescale, and debris, water cannot flow freely through the system, triggering E22. This code is specific to a filter blockage rather than a general drainage fault and is one of the most preventable errors on Bosch dishwashers.

Step-by-step

1
Unplug the dishwasher from the mains before reaching into the tub base
The drain pump can activate without warning if power is present
2
Remove the lower dish basket to access the filter assembly at the base of the tub
The cylindrical coarse filter unscrews anti-clockwise and the flat fine mesh filter lifts out from the recess beneath it
3
Rinse both filter components thoroughly under warm running water, scrubbing all mesh surfaces with an old toothbrush
Pay close attention to the fine mesh filter as this is where grease and small food particles accumulate most densely
4
Check the filter housing recess itself for any solid debris that may have bypassed the filter and settled in the sump
Remove anything found using a cloth or kitchen towel
5
Refit both filter components firmly — ensure the cylindrical filter is locked clockwise until it clicks
Then run a Quick Wash to test

Symptoms to look for

  1. E22 displayed at any point during a programme
  2. Dishes coming out with food residue or grit still present after a full wash cycle
  3. Standing water remaining in the tub base at the end of a programme alongside E22
  4. Unusual smell from the dishwasher caused by food debris decomposing in a heavily blocked filter

How to fix it

Time 20–35 minutes
Skill Anyone
Unplug the machine before starting

Disconnect the dishwasher from the mains. If the machine stopped mid-cycle there may be hot, soapy water standing in the tub base — have a towel ready.

Always unplug before reaching into the base of the tub. The drain pump can activate without warning if power is present and will spray hot water directly at the operator.
Remove and clean the cylindrical coarse filter

Open the door and remove the lower basket. Grasp the cylindrical coarse filter at the centre of the tub base and turn it anti-clockwise until it releases, then lift it out. Rinse it under warm running water and scrub all surfaces with a toothbrush to remove trapped food particles and grease.

The coarse filter catches larger food debris and should be cleaned regularly. If it is heavily compacted with material, soak it in warm soapy water for five minutes before scrubbing to loosen the blockage.
Remove and clean the fine mesh filter

Lift out the flat fine mesh filter from the recess beneath where the cylindrical filter sat. This filter is responsible for catching the smallest food particles and is the most common source of E22. Rinse it under warm running water and scrub all mesh surfaces thoroughly with a toothbrush.

Hold the fine mesh filter up to a light source after cleaning to check that all mesh holes are fully open. Even a thin film of grease across the mesh surface is sufficient to restrict flow enough to trigger E22. If grease is heavily embedded, soak in warm water with a small amount of washing-up liquid before scrubbing.
Clean the filter housing recess and sump

With both filter components removed, wipe around the inside of the filter housing recess with a damp cloth to remove any debris that has settled in the sump area. Shine a torch into the sump to check for any solid objects such as glass fragments, small bones, or debris that may have passed through.

Inspect the sump with a torch before inserting your fingers. Broken glass and ceramic fragments can settle in the sump area and will cause cuts without warning. Use long-nose pliers or a cloth to retrieve any visible sharp objects rather than bare fingers.
Descale the filter system if in a hard water area

If you are in a hard water area and E22 has appeared despite regular cleaning, limescale build-up on both the filter mesh and the filter housing seating surface may be causing the restriction. Place both filter components in a bowl of warm water with a dishwasher descaling tablet or a tablespoon of citric acid powder and leave to soak for 20 minutes, then scrub and rinse.

Running a dedicated dishwasher descaler tablet through an empty 65-degree cycle once a month will prevent limescale accumulating in the filter system and significantly reduce the frequency of E22.
Refit the filters correctly and run a test

Place the fine mesh filter flat into the recess with the mesh side facing upward. Insert the cylindrical coarse filter into the housing and turn it clockwise until it locks with a click — an incorrectly seated filter will cause an immediate recurrence of E22. Replace the lower basket and run a Quick Wash programme to confirm the fault has cleared.

A cylindrical filter that is not fully locked will vibrate loose during the wash cycle, allowing unfiltered water to recirculate through the spray arms and potentially block the circulation pump with food debris.

When to call an engineer

  • E22 returns immediately after a thorough filter clean and descale — fine mesh filter is torn or damaged and must be replaced
  • Sump area contains solid debris that cannot be retrieved from the tub side — pump access required
  • Filter housing seating surface is cracked or deformed, preventing the filter from seating and sealing correctly
  • E22 persists after filter replacement — flow sensor or control board fault requires specialist diagnosis
Common questions

Frequently asked questions

How often should I clean the filter on my Bosch dishwasher to prevent E22?
Bosch recommends cleaning both filter components after every 10 to 15 wash cycles. With daily use this typically means at least weekly cleaning. Households with heavily soiled dishes or hard water should clean more frequently to prevent E22.
What is the difference between E22 and E24 on a Bosch dishwasher?
E22 specifically indicates a filter system blockage — the filter is so blocked it is affecting water flow and machine performance. E24 indicates a general drainage fault where the machine has failed to drain the tub within the expected time, which may be caused by a filter blockage but can also result from a blocked drain hose or a failed pump.
Can limescale cause E22 even if I clean the filter regularly?
Yes — in hard water areas limescale deposits build up on the mesh and housing surfaces even with regular cleaning, progressively reducing the effective mesh opening. Running a dedicated descaler through an empty programme once a month prevents this.
Is E22 something I can fix at home?
Yes — in the vast majority of cases E22 is resolved by thoroughly cleaning both filter components. It requires no tools and takes fewer than ten minutes. It is one of the most straightforward faults to fix on a Bosch dishwasher.
