What this error means

Drainage fault — the drain pump impeller is blocked or obstructed and cannot move water from the tub.

The E25 error on a Bosch dishwasher is a more specific drainage fault than E24. Where E24 indicates a general failure to drain, E25 specifically points to a blocked or obstructed drain pump impeller as the cause. The control board has detected that the drain pump is running but the impeller cannot rotate freely, preventing water from being moved out of the tub. The most common causes are a foreign object such as a glass fragment, small bone, fruit stone, or piece of broken crockery that has passed through the filter system and become lodged in or around the impeller blades. A coin, hair grip, or bottle cap can also reach the impeller and cause this fault.

Step-by-step

1
Unplug the dishwasher from the mains before starting
The drain pump can activate without warning and spray hot water at pressure if the machine is powered during inspection
2
Remove the lower basket and unscrew both filter components from the tub base
Turn the cylindrical coarse filter anti-clockwise to release it, then lift out the flat fine mesh filter from the recess beneath
3
Shine a torch into the empty sump cavity and look carefully for any foreign object visible at or near the drain pump impeller entrance
Glass fragments, small bones, bottle caps, and coins are the most common items found
4
Try to rotate the pump impeller gently using a non-metallic implement such as a wooden cocktail stick or a plastic pen lid
It should rotate with light, even resistance; stiffness or inability to move at all confirms an obstruction
5
Carefully remove any visible obstruction using long-nose pliers, refit the filters, plug in, and run a Quick Wash to test

Symptoms to look for

  1. E25 displayed during or at the end of a wash cycle with water remaining in the tub
  2. Drain pump activates but produces no water flow from the drain hose — motor is running against a seized impeller
  3. Loud grinding, rattling, or clicking sound from the base of the machine during the drain phase
  4. Machine completes the wash phase but fails to drain before the spin or drying phase begins

How to fix it

Time 20–45 minutes
Skill Anyone
Prepare safely before starting

Unplug the dishwasher from the mains completely. If the machine stopped mid-cycle, hot soapy water may be standing in the tub base. Open the door slowly to allow steam to escape and have a towel ready.

Never reach into the tub base or sump area with the machine plugged in. The drain pump can activate unexpectedly and spray hot, pressurised water directly at the operator without any warning. This is a serious burn risk.
Remove both filter components

Remove the lower basket. Turn the cylindrical coarse filter anti-clockwise until it releases and lift it out. Lift out the flat fine mesh filter from the recess beneath. Set both aside. With the filters removed, the sump cavity and drain pump entrance are fully accessible.

Even if you are confident the cause is an impeller obstruction rather than a filter blockage, clean both filter components while they are removed. A compacted film of grease on the fine mesh filter adds to the restriction on the impeller and should be cleared at the same time.
Inspect the sump and impeller with a torch

Shine a torch directly into the sump cavity. Look carefully at the area around the drain pump entrance for any foreign object that is visible resting against or partially inside the pump entrance. Common items found include: glass fragments, small pieces of bone or fruit stone, bottle caps, coins, and fragments of broken crockery. Note the position of the obstruction before attempting to remove it.

Inspect thoroughly with the torch before inserting any implement or finger. E25 is caused by a solid foreign object, which means the sump area may contain sharp glass fragments or ceramic pieces that are not immediately obvious. Never probe blindly — always look first.
Check the impeller rotation

Using a non-metallic implement — a wooden cocktail stick, a plastic pen cap, or the blunt end of a wooden skewer — gently try to rotate the pump impeller. It should turn with smooth, light resistance through a full rotation. Complete inability to move, extreme stiffness, or rotation that catches and releases repeatedly in the same position all confirm that an object is jammed in or around the impeller blades.

Never use metal implements to try to free a seized impeller. Metal tools can chip or crack the plastic impeller blades, damage the pump housing internally, or push the obstruction deeper into the pump body where it becomes unreachable without dismantling the pump.
Remove the obstruction

Using long-nose pliers, tweezers, or a flexible retrieval tool, carefully extract the foreign object from the sump or impeller area. Work slowly and methodically, avoiding pushing the object further into the pump body. Once the object is removed, recheck the impeller rotation with the cocktail stick — it should now spin freely with light, even resistance throughout a full turn.

If the object is visible but cannot be extracted from the sump access point, or if the impeller remains stiff after the object appears to have been removed, there may be a secondary obstruction deeper inside the pump housing that cannot be reached from the filter side. The pump will need to be removed for a full internal inspection.
Clean the filters and run a test

Rinse both filter components under warm running water, scrub the mesh with a toothbrush, and refit them correctly — place the fine mesh filter flat with mesh facing up, then lock the cylindrical filter clockwise until it clicks. Replace the lower basket. Plug in and run a Quick Wash. Listen during the drain phase — the pump should activate immediately and produce a smooth, uninterrupted flow of water from the drain hose with no grinding or rattling.

A rattling or grinding sound during the drain phase after clearing the obstruction indicates a small fragment of the original object — often a chip of glass or ceramic — is still present in the pump housing. This will cause progressive damage to the impeller and must be cleared before normal use resumes.

When to call an engineer

  • Foreign object visible in the sump but cannot be retrieved from the filter access point — pump must be removed for internal access
  • Impeller remains stiff or seized after all visible obstructions have been removed — a fragment is lodged deeper inside the pump housing
  • Pump motor has burnt out from repeated running against a seized impeller — motor winding reads open circuit and the pump must be replaced
  • Impeller blades are chipped or cracked from contact with the foreign object — pump must be replaced to prevent recurrence
Common questions

Frequently asked questions

What is the most common object found causing E25 on a Bosch dishwasher?
Glass fragments from a broken item during a wash cycle are the most common cause, followed by small bones, fruit stones, and bottle caps. A single small glass chip lodged against the impeller blade is sufficient to trigger E25.
How do I know if the obstruction has been fully removed after clearing E25?
Run a Quick Wash after clearing and listen carefully during the drain phase. The pump should run smoothly with a continuous, even water flow from the drain hose and no grinding, rattling, or intermittent noise. Any unusual pump sound indicates a remaining fragment.
Can E25 cause permanent damage to the drain pump if left?
Yes — a pump impeller that is fully or partially seized and is being forced by a running motor generates significant heat and mechanical stress. The motor windings can burn out if the pump continues to run against a seized impeller over multiple cycles.
How do I prevent E25 from occurring?
Always check the inside of the dishwasher after any glassware breaks during a cycle. Remove any visible fragments before running the next wash. Clean the filter assembly regularly so that small fragments are captured before they reach the pump. Avoid washing very small items that could fall through the basket and reach the sump.
