What this error means

Drainage fault — the dishwasher has failed to drain water from the tub within the expected time.

The E24 error on a Bosch dishwasher means the machine has failed to drain the tub within the programmed drain time window. Bosch dishwashers monitor drainage progress continuously and display E24 when water has not been removed successfully. The most common causes are a blocked filter assembly at the base of the tub, a foreign object jamming the drain pump impeller, a kinked or incorrectly installed drain hose, or a blocked household sink waste trap preventing water from leaving the machine. A failed drain pump motor will also produce this code.

Step-by-step

1
Unplug the dishwasher from the mains before starting any inspection
The drain pump can activate unexpectedly and will spray hot water without warning if the machine is powered
2
Remove the lower dish basket and unscrew the cylindrical coarse filter anti-clockwise, then lift out the flat fine mesh filter beneath it
Have a towel ready as residual water will be present in the tub base
3
Rinse both filter components thoroughly under warm running water, scrubbing all mesh surfaces with a toothbrush
A blocked filter is the most common cause of E24 and cleaning it resolves the fault in the majority of cases
4
Check the full length of the drain hose at the rear for kinks and confirm the end in the standpipe is no more than 10 to 12 cm deep
Check that the household sink waste trap is clear at the same time
5
Refit both filters firmly with the cylindrical filter locked clockwise, plug in, and run a Quick Wash to test

Symptoms to look for

  1. Water clearly visible standing in the base of the tub at the end of a programme
  2. Dishwasher stops mid-cycle with standing water remaining in the tub
  3. Grinding, rattling, or loud humming from the base of the machine during the drain phase
  4. E24 displayed near the end of a wash or rinse programme

How to fix it

Time 20–40 minutes
Skill Anyone
Prepare the machine safely

Unplug the dishwasher from the mains. If the machine stopped mid-cycle, hot soapy water may be standing in the tub base. Open the door slowly to allow any steam to escape and have a towel ready to absorb water when working at the base of the tub.

Always unplug before reaching into the filter and sump area. The drain pump can activate without warning if power is present and will spray hot, pressurised water at the operator.
Remove and clean the complete filter assembly

Remove the lower basket. Unscrew the cylindrical coarse filter anti-clockwise and lift it out. Lift out the flat fine mesh filter from the recess beneath it. Rinse both thoroughly under warm running water, scrubbing all surfaces with a toothbrush to remove food grease, soap residue, and trapped debris.

Hold the fine mesh filter up to a light source after cleaning to confirm every mesh hole is fully open. A greasy film across the mesh is enough to restrict drainage flow sufficiently to trigger E24 even when the filter does not appear heavily soiled.
Inspect the sump and drain pump entrance

With both filters removed, shine a torch into the sump cavity. Look carefully for glass fragments, small bones, fruit stones, bottle caps, or solid debris blocking the drain pump entrance at the base of the sump. Try to rotate the pump impeller gently using a non-metallic implement such as a wooden cocktail stick. It should turn with slight, even resistance.

Always inspect with a torch before inserting any implement or finger. Broken glass and sharp ceramic fragments can settle in the sump and will cause deep cuts without warning. Use long-nose pliers to retrieve any visible sharp objects rather than bare fingers.
Inspect and reposition the drain hose

Pull the dishwasher forward slightly and inspect the drain hose along its full accessible length. Straighten every kink and compressed section. The hose end in the standpipe should be no more than 10 to 12 centimetres deep — inserting it deeper creates a continuous syphon effect that prevents proper drainage. The hose should loop upward to at least 40 centimetres above floor level before descending to the waste connection.

Check the household sink waste trap and standpipe for blockages. A partially or fully blocked household drain is a frequently overlooked cause of E24 because the Bosch pump cannot force water past a blocked outlet regardless of its own condition.
Check the drain hose connection at the machine

With the machine unplugged, confirm that the drain hose connection at the machine body is fully seated and clamped. A loose or partially pulled-out hose connection reduces the internal hose diameter and can restrict drainage enough to trigger E24.

Bosch dishwashers have a short internal outlet hose between the pump and the main drain hose. If this is kinked or compressed due to the machine being pushed back at an angle, it will restrict drainage even when the external hose is correctly routed.
Run a drain test to confirm the repair

Refit both filter components firmly, lock the cylindrical filter clockwise until it clicks, and replace the lower basket. Plug in and run a Quick Wash. The drain pump should activate within the first few minutes and water should flow clearly from the drain hose.

If the pump activates with a grinding or rattling noise but no water flows from the hose, there is solid debris in the pump body that cannot be cleared from the sump side. At this point the pump will need to be removed for a full internal inspection.

When to call an engineer

  • Drain pump impeller will not rotate by hand after filter removal — solid debris is inside the pump body or the impeller is broken
  • Drain pump motor hums continuously but produces no water movement — motor winding has failed and the pump must be replaced
  • E24 returns immediately after a thorough filter clean, sump inspection, and drain hose check
  • Burning smell or scorch marks visible beneath the dishwasher near the pump location
Common questions

Frequently asked questions

What is the most common cause of E24 on a Bosch dishwasher?
A blocked filter assembly is the most common cause by a significant margin. Food grease, debris, and limescale accumulate in the fine mesh filter over time and restrict drainage flow enough to trigger E24. Cleaning both filter components thoroughly resolves the fault in the majority of cases.
How is E24 different from E22 on a Bosch dishwasher?
E22 specifically identifies the filter system as the source of the problem. E24 is a broader drainage fault code that means the tub failed to drain within the expected time — the cause could be a blocked filter, a blocked drain hose, a blocked household drain, or a failed pump.
Can a blocked sink drain cause E24 on my Bosch dishwasher?
Yes — a partially or fully blocked sink waste trap or standpipe creates back-pressure that the Bosch drain pump cannot overcome. Always check and clear the household drain as part of any E24 investigation.
Is it safe to leave water standing in the dishwasher after E24 appears?
Not for more than a few hours. Warm stagnant water encourages bacteria and mould growth in the tub, filter, and spray arms. Investigate and resolve the drainage fault as soon as possible.
