What this error means

Overflow error — the dishwasher has detected an abnormally high water level

The FE error on an LG dishwasher means the water level sensor has detected that the water inside the machine has exceeded the safe maximum. This is a safety-critical fault. The most common causes are a stuck-open inlet valve allowing uncontrolled water entry, a blocked filter preventing normal water turnover and causing gradual level accumulation, a failed water level sensor, or a blocked pressure hose causing the sensor to under-read the true water level.

Step-by-step

1
Turn the water supply tap off immediately
If the inlet valve is stuck open this stops further water entering the machine
2
Unplug the dishwasher from the mains
3
Do not open the door yet — if the machine stopped mid-programme the water level may be above the door seal
Opening too quickly can cause hot water and detergent to pour from the tub
4
Wait 5 minutes to allow any automatic emergency drain to complete before opening the door slowly
Diagnostic

Symptoms to look for

  1. Dishwasher fills to an unusually high level — water visible near or at the door seal
  2. FE displayed during or shortly after the fill phase
  3. Water escaping from the door seal or vent during the fill phase
  4. Machine fills but does not proceed to wash — sits full of water with FE showing

What to check

Stop water entry and assess

Turn the water supply tap fully closed and unplug the machine. Wait 5 minutes then open the door very slowly — stand back as water may pour out if the level was high. Have towels ready. Scoop out excess water with a jug if the level is at or above the door seal.

If FE appeared during a hot programme, steam will exit immediately as the door opens. Stand back and open slowly. Do not reach into the tub with bare hands until you have confirmed the water has cooled.
Clean the filter assembly

Remove the lower basket and thoroughly clean both the cylindrical coarse filter and the flat fine mesh filter. A blocked filter prevents water from circulating correctly — water accumulates in the tub between fill phases and the level rises gradually over the course of a long programme, eventually triggering FE. Refit the filter firmly.

FE is sometimes caused by a combination of a partially blocked filter and a longer programme that involves multiple fill cycles — the level rises incrementally rather than all at once.
Inspect the pressure hose and sensor

With the dishwasher unplugged, remove the lower kickplate panel. Locate the narrow pressure hose running from the base of the tub to the water level sensor. Disconnect it from both ends and blow through it — airflow must be completely unobstructed. Clear the tub connection stub with a cotton bud if blocked with detergent residue.

A blocked pressure hose causes the sensor to under-read the water level, allowing the machine to keep filling beyond the normal level.
Check the inlet valve for a stuck-open condition

With the machine unplugged and the water supply turned off at the wall, check whether water drips or trickles into the tub even with the machine unplugged. Open the tap briefly and watch the spray arm or tub base for any water entry. Any water with the machine unplugged confirms the valve is mechanically stuck open and must be replaced.

Even with the dishwasher unplugged, a stuck-open valve with the tap turned on will continuously fill the machine. Keep the tap off at all times during this check.
Dry the base and run a monitored test

Once the tub is drained and any repairs have been made, restore power and water and run a Quick Wash while remaining present throughout. Confirm the water level stabilises at the normal operating level — well below the door seal opening.

Do not leave the machine unattended during the first test cycle after an FE fault. Stop and unplug immediately if the water level approaches the door seal.

When to call an engineer

  • Inlet valve is stuck open — water enters with machine unplugged and tap turned on
  • Pressure sensor does not change state when pressure is applied — sensor has failed
  • Pressure hose confirmed clear but overfilling persists — control board relay fault
  • All components test correctly but FE returns on every cycle — engineer required
Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Is FE dangerous on an LG dishwasher?
Yes — an overfilling dishwasher can flood the kitchen and, if water reaches the base tray, trigger a secondary electrical or float switch fault. Turn off the water supply immediately when FE appears.
Can a blocked filter cause FE on an LG dishwasher?
Yes — a heavily blocked filter prevents the normal water turnover between cycle phases. Water accumulates gradually in the tub and can rise to the FE threshold over the course of a longer programme.
How do I safely open the door after an FE fault?
Open the door very slowly and stand back slightly. If the level was high, water and detergent will flow out as the door seal is broken. Have towels ready before touching the handle.
What is the difference between FE and OE on an LG dishwasher?
OE means the machine cannot drain — the pump or hose is blocked. FE means the water level has risen too high — caused by overfilling or the inability to control water entry.
