What this error means

Communication error — the main control board has lost contact with a sub-module

The CE error on an LG dishwasher indicates a communication failure between the main control board and another internal electronic module — typically the display panel, a sensor module, or a sub-controller. It is most commonly caused by a wiring connector that has worked loose, corrosion on connector pins, a power surge disrupting the communication bus, or a failed control board.

Step-by-step

1
Turn the dishwasher off using the power button and unplug it completely from the mains
2
Wait a full 10 to 15 minutes before plugging back in
Control boards require a complete power discharge to reinitialise their communication systems — a brief unplug is often insufficient
3
Plug back in and try a cold start on a Quick Wash
Do not select a programme before plugging in as this allows the board to initialise cleanly
4
If CE reappears immediately on every attempt proceed to the diagnostic steps below
Diagnostic

Symptoms to look for

  1. Dishwasher will not start any programme
  2. CE displayed immediately when a programme is selected
  3. Controls respond only partially or behave erratically
  4. Machine starts but stops unpredictably mid-cycle with no other fault code

Perform a complete power discharge

Unplug the dishwasher and hold the power button for 15 seconds to drain capacitor charge from the control board. Leave unplugged for 10 minutes minimum. Plug back in and retry.

CE caused by a power surge or a one-off communication dropout will often clear with a full discharge and not recur. If it clears and returns sporadically, note how many cycles it takes — this helps an engineer diagnose whether it is a connector or a board fault.
Access the main control board

With the dishwasher completely unplugged, remove the inner door panel by undoing the screws around its inner edge and carefully lifting the panel. The main control board is typically mounted in the door — a rectangular PCB in a plastic housing. Photograph all wiring connections in detail before touching anything.

Wait at least 2 minutes after unplugging before touching any board connections. Control boards contain capacitors that hold charge briefly after the mains is disconnected. Handle all connectors by their plastic housings only — static discharge can damage board components.
Inspect and reseat all wiring connectors

Work methodically across every wiring connector on the board. Each should be pressed firmly and evenly until fully seated. Pull each apart and press firmly back in. Pay particular attention to the connector linking the main board to the display panel — this is the most common communication path to fail on LG dishwashers.

A connector that looks seated but is slightly tilted will intermittently interrupt communication. Always disconnect and firmly reconnect every connector even when it appears fine.
Check for moisture and corrosion

Examine every connector and the board terminals for green or white deposits indicating corrosion, or signs of moisture ingress — watermarks, rust staining, or visible dampness on connector pins. Clean affected pins gently with a dry cotton bud.

Do not spray electrical contact cleaner directly onto the board. Use a dry cotton bud only on affected connector pins.
Inspect the display panel wiring

Trace the wiring from the main board to the door display panel. On LG dishwashers the display panel connects to the main board by a ribbon cable or multi-pin harness. Check the cable is not kinked, pinched in the door hinge, or showing wear marks from repeated door opening. Disconnect and firmly reseat the connector.

A ribbon cable that runs through the door hinge area is vulnerable to gradual wear from repeated door movement. If wear marks are visible on the cable, it needs replacing.
Reassemble and run a test

Reconnect all wiring, reassemble the door panel and run a Quick Wash from a cold start. If CE does not appear, run two further cycles to confirm stability before returning to normal use.

If CE clears for a few cycles then returns, the fault is an intermittent connector or wiring issue that worsens with door vibration — the relevant connector or harness section needs replacing.

When to call an engineer

  • Visible burnt components or scorch marks on the control board surface
  • Corrosion on board connector pins that cannot be cleaned with a dry cotton bud
  • CE persists immediately on every cycle after full reset and connector reseating
  • Ribbon cable to display panel shows visible wear or damage from door hinge movement
Common questions

Frequently asked questions

What causes CE on an LG dishwasher?
Most commonly a loose wiring connector between the main control board and the display panel or a sensor module, or board damage from a power surge.
Can a power cut cause CE?
Yes — power surges and sudden outages are one of the most common causes. A full 10-minute power discharge and cold restart resolves this in many cases.
Is it safe to keep using the dishwasher after CE?
No — the machine is not in full communication with all its control systems and may behave unpredictably or fail to manage heating, filling, or draining safely.
How do I know if the control board needs replacing?
If all connectors are firmly reseated, there is no visible moisture or corrosion, and CE appears on every cycle without exception after a full reset, the board itself has failed and needs replacing.
