What does the Bosch E09 error code mean?
E09 is more commonly associated with Dishwashers but can appear on Washing Machines and points to a fault with the heating element or its associated temperature sensor (NTC thermistor). The machine cannot heat the water to the programmed temperature. Clothes may come out cold or under-washed, and hot or boil wash programs will not complete properly.
How to fix the Bosch E09 error code
- Run a 90°C boil wash — if it fails partway through or trips your home’s circuit breaker, the heating element has likely failed.
- Unplug the machine. The heating element sits at the bottom of the drum, accessed from the front (requires removing the door seal and front panel).
- Use a multimeter to test the element across its two terminals — a healthy element reads 20–30 ohms. An open circuit (no reading) means the element is blown.
- Also test the NTC thermistor — it should read around 20,000 ohms at room temperature.
- If the element is faulty, replacements are widely available for £15–25. If you are not comfortable with this level of disassembly, an engineer is recommended.
