What does the Bosch E09 error code mean?

E09 is more commonly associated with Dishwashers but can appear on Washing Machines and points to a fault with the heating element or its associated temperature sensor (NTC thermistor). The machine cannot heat the water to the programmed temperature. Clothes may come out cold or under-washed, and hot or boil wash programs will not complete properly.

How to fix the Bosch E09 error code

  1. Run a 90°C boil wash — if it fails partway through or trips your home’s circuit breaker, the heating element has likely failed.
  2. Unplug the machine. The heating element sits at the bottom of the drum, accessed from the front (requires removing the door seal and front panel).
  3. Use a multimeter to test the element across its two terminals — a healthy element reads 20–30 ohms. An open circuit (no reading) means the element is blown.
  4. Also test the NTC thermistor — it should read around 20,000 ohms at room temperature.
  5. If the element is faulty, replacements are widely available for £15–25. If you are not comfortable with this level of disassembly, an engineer is recommended.
