What this error means

The E23 error code on your Bosch washing machine means the Aquastop anti-flood system has detected a water leak and has shut the machine down to protect your home.

The E23 error is triggered by Bosch's built-in Aquastop flood protection system. A float switch sits in the base tray of the machine — if water leaks into this tray from any internal component, the float rises, triggers the switch, and the machine immediately locks out and displays E23. This is a deliberate safety feature designed to prevent serious water damage to your home. You should not attempt to bypass or ignore this error. Common causes include a split or loose inlet hose, a leaking door seal (drum gasket), a cracked detergent drawer housing, or a leak from the drum, pump, or internal hose connections. The Aquastop hose itself (the blue or grey braided hose connecting the water supply to the machine) also contains its own valve that can trigger if the hose is damaged.

Step-by-step

1
Turn off the water supply tap behind or beside the machine immediately
Do not skip this step. Stopping the water supply prevents any more water entering the machine.
2
Switch the machine off and unplug it from the wall
Water may be present inside the machine's electrical components. Do not touch the machine again until it is unplugged.
3
Carefully pull the machine forward and look underneath and behind it
Use a torch to check for puddles, drips, or wet patches on the floor or on the back of the machine.
4
Tilt the machine carefully to one side (get help — machines are heavy)
This allows any water collected in the base tray to drain out through the front. Keep a towel handy.
5
Inspect the Aquastop inlet hose at the back
Check along the full length of the hose for cracks, splits, or loose connections at both the tap end and the machine end. Tighten or replace if needed.
6
Check the door seal (rubber gasket) for visible tears or damage
Look carefully around the entire ring. Foreign objects like coins or bra wires can puncture the seal.
7
Do not reconnect the machine until you have identified and fixed the source of the leak
Running the machine with an active leak risks water damage and electrical hazards.

Symptoms to look for

  1. E23 or Aquastop warning displayed
  2. Machine stops suddenly and will not restart
  3. Water visible on the floor around or under the machine
  4. Machine door locked and will not open
  5. Damp or wet base tray when machine is tilted

Shut off the water supply immediately

Turn the isolation tap (the tap on the water supply pipe behind or beside the machine) to the closed position. If you cannot find an isolation tap, turn off the mains stopcock for your property. This stops any more water from entering the machine.

Do not attempt to run the machine or clear the error until you have found and fixed the source of the leak. Doing so risks causing serious water damage to your home.
Switch off and unplug the machine

Press the power button to turn the machine off, then remove the plug from the wall socket. Do not touch internal components while the machine is plugged in.

Never work on a washing machine that is still connected to the mains, especially when water is involved.
Locate and check the Aquastop inlet hose

The Aquastop hose is the braided hose at the back of the machine that connects your water supply to the machine. Inspect it along its full length for cracks, bulges, or splits. Check that both end connections are tight — one at the tap and one at the back of the machine. The Aquastop hose contains a built-in valve that can trigger E23 if the hose is damaged. If you find damage, replace the hose before using the machine again.

Aquastop hoses are specific to the machine model. Use a genuine Bosch replacement hose to maintain the flood protection system.
Tilt the machine and drain the base tray

With a helper, carefully tilt the machine to one side or forwards to drain any water that has collected in the plastic base tray. Place towels on the floor first. The float switch that triggered E23 sits in this tray — once the tray is empty, the float will drop and the error should be able to reset.

If a significant amount of water drains out, there is a definite internal leak that needs to be found before you use the machine again.
Inspect the door seal

Open the machine door and run your fingers all the way around the rubber door seal (gasket). Look and feel for tears, splits, holes, or objects such as coins, bra underwires, or broken zip teeth embedded in the rubber. These can cause the seal to leak during a wash cycle. Small tears can sometimes be sealed with a rubber repair kit, but a badly damaged seal should be replaced.

Clean the door seal fold regularly — a build-up of mould and grime can eventually degrade the rubber and cause small splits to develop.
Check the detergent drawer and housing

Pull the detergent drawer fully out (press the release tab) and check the housing inside the machine for cracks or lime-scale build-up that could be causing water to overflow into the machine body rather than into the drum. Clean with warm water and descale if necessary.

Blocked detergent drawer channels cause the water to overflow sideways rather than flushing through into the drum, which can drip into the base tray and trigger E23.
Check for internal hose leaks

If you are comfortable doing so, remove the back panel of the machine (three or four screws) and inspect the internal hoses for cracks or loose jubilee clips. Tighten any loose clips. If you are not confident doing this, call a qualified engineer.

Only inspect the back panel once the machine is unplugged. Do not reconnect the machine until the back panel is securely refitted.
Reset and test

Once you are confident the leak source has been found and fixed, plug the machine back in and restore the water supply. Run a short cycle on a low temperature and observe the machine throughout — watch for any drips beneath or behind the machine. If E23 appears again or you can see water leaking, switch off immediately and call an engineer.

Do not leave the machine unattended during the first test cycle after an E23 fault.

When to call an engineer

  • Leak source cannot be identified after checking hose, seal, and drawer
  • Water is coming from an internal hose or the drum bearings
  • E23 returns immediately after reset even with no visible external leak
  • Suspected crack in the outer drum or tub
  • Water is near or appears to have reached any electrical components
Common questions

Frequently asked questions

What does E23 mean on a Bosch washing machine?
E23 means the Aquastop anti-flood system has activated. A float switch in the base of the machine has detected water in the drip tray, which means there is a leak somewhere inside the machine. The machine has locked itself out to prevent flooding your home.
Is it safe to use my Bosch washing machine when it shows E23?
No. You should not use the machine until the source of the leak has been identified and repaired. Running the machine with an active leak could cause serious water damage to your home and is potentially dangerous if water reaches electrical components.
How do I reset the E23 error on my Bosch washing machine?
The error will not reset until the water in the base tray has been drained (usually by tilting the machine) and the underlying leak has been fixed. Once the float drops back down and the fault is repaired, the error should clear when you restart the machine.
What is the Aquastop system on a Bosch washing machine?
Aquastop is Bosch's built-in anti-flood protection. It includes a special inlet hose with a built-in cut-off valve and a float switch in the machine's base tray. If water leaks internally, the float rises and immediately shuts the machine down and closes the water supply.
Can I fix a Bosch E23 error myself?
You can carry out the initial checks — inspecting the inlet hose, door seal, and detergent drawer — yourself safely. However, if you cannot find the source of the leak or if it involves internal components, you should call a qualified engineer.
