What this error means

The E21 error code on your Bosch washing machine means a motor fault has been detected — the machine has found a problem with the motor itself and has stopped the cycle to prevent damage.

The E21 error code indicates that the machine has detected a fault directly with the main drive motor. This is distinct from E02 (which is a motor control electronics fault) — E21 points to a physical or electrical fault within the motor itself. This includes worn carbon brushes on brush-type motors, a short circuit in the motor windings, a motor that has seized (stopped spinning), or a fault with the motor's tachometer (the small component that tells the machine how fast the motor is spinning). On newer Bosch machines with inverter (brushless) motors, E21 can also point to a fault within the inverter motor unit. As with all motor faults, a power reset is the first step before any further investigation.

Step-by-step

1
Switch off the machine and unplug it for 5 minutes
Allow the machine to fully power down before retrying. Motor protection circuits can trigger E21 temporarily if the motor overheats.
2
Reduce the load in the drum
Overloading places extra strain on the motor. Remove several items, redistribute evenly, and retry with a lighter load.
3
Try a different programme
Start with a simple rinse-and-spin. If the drum turns without error on this programme, the fault may have been load-related or heat-related.
4
Listen carefully when the drum starts to rotate
A healthy motor is quiet. Grinding, clicking, or a burning smell indicates a physical motor fault that needs an engineer.
5
Do not continue running the machine if you detect a burning smell
Switch off immediately and unplug. A burning smell suggests the motor windings or carbon brushes are failing and continued use could cause further damage.

Symptoms to look for

  1. E21 displayed on the control panel
  2. Drum failing to rotate or rotating intermittently
  3. Loud grinding, clicking, or buzzing from the motor area
  4. Burning smell during a cycle
  5. Machine starts normally then stops part-way through the wash or spin phase

Full power reset

Unplug the machine and leave it disconnected for at least 5 minutes. Motor thermal protection can trigger E21 if the motor has been running hot — a rest period allows it to cool and the control board to reset. Plug back in and try a short cycle.

If E21 only ever appears after long or consecutive cycles, motor overheating is a strong possibility. Allow longer rest periods between washes.
Test with a reduced load

Remove all items from the drum completely and run an empty rinse-and-spin cycle. If the drum turns freely with no load, overloading was likely the cause. If the drum does not turn at all, or E21 appears immediately, the fault is in the motor or tachometer.

Running a completely empty test cycle is the best way to rule out load as a contributing factor.
Check motor brushes (brush motor models)

On Bosch washing machines manufactured before approximately 2012, the drive motor uses carbon brushes that wear down over time. When they become too short, the motor loses power and the machine stops. Brushes can be accessed from the back of the machine after removing the back panel. They slot into the motor housing and should be at least 5–6 mm long to function correctly. Replacement brushes cost £5–£15 and are available online.

The machine must be completely unplugged and the power supply confirmed as off before removing the back panel or touching any internal components.
Identify your motor type

Check your machine's model number (on the data plate inside the door frame, or on the back panel) and search online to confirm whether it uses a brush motor or a brushless inverter motor. Inverter motor models will usually say "EcoSilence Drive" or "iQdrive" on the front panel or in the product description. Brush replacement is only relevant for brush motor models.

Bosch inverter motors are typically more durable than brush motors and less likely to develop E21, but when they do fail the motor unit usually needs to be replaced entirely rather than repaired.
Inspect the tachometer

The tachometer (tacho) is a small sensor attached to the motor that measures the drum rotation speed. A faulty tacho can cause E21 even when the motor itself is healthy. An engineer can test the tacho with a multimeter — a faulty tacho is often cheaper to replace than a new motor.

If an engineer confirms E21 is a tacho fault, ask for the tacho to be tested before any motor replacement is agreed. It can save significant money.
Book an engineer if required

If the error persists after a power reset, with an empty drum, on multiple programmes, the fault is most likely a worn motor, a faulty tachometer, or in some cases a fault on the motor wiring harness. All of these require an engineer with appropriate testing equipment.

Do not continue using the machine if you can smell burning from the drum area. This indicates a serious motor fault that could present a fire risk.

When to call an engineer

  • E21 persists after power reset with an empty drum
  • Burning smell detected during operation
  • Drum not rotating on any programme
  • Motor makes grinding or clicking sounds consistently
  • Tachometer or motor wiring fault confirmed with a multimeter
Common questions

Frequently asked questions

What does E21 mean on a Bosch washing machine?
E21 is a motor fault. The machine has detected a problem directly with the drive motor — this could be worn carbon brushes, a faulty tachometer, a seized motor, or a problem with the motor windings.
What is the difference between E21 and E02 on a Bosch washing machine?
E02 is a motor control electronics fault (a problem with the board that controls the motor), while E21 is a fault with the physical motor itself. Both can produce similar symptoms but require different repairs.
Can I fix Bosch E21 myself?
A power reset and checking for overloading are safe DIY steps. Carbon brush replacement on older brush-motor models is achievable with basic tools. Any deeper motor investigation or replacement should be handled by a qualified engineer.
How much does motor replacement cost on a Bosch washing machine?
Replacement motor costs vary widely by model, from around £60 to £200 for the part. Labour on top means a full motor replacement by an engineer can cost £150 to £350. On older machines, it is worth getting a quote before committing.
Why does my Bosch washing machine smell of burning with E21?
A burning smell alongside E21 usually means the motor carbon brushes are worn down to the metal and are arcing, or that the motor windings are starting to fail. Switch the machine off immediately and do not use it again until it has been inspected by an engineer.
