What this error means

Motor control fault — the motor control board has detected a fault in the drive circuit

The F01 error indicates a fault with the motor control system — the electronic module responsible for driving the drum motor. This can be caused by a communication failure between the main control board and the motor control module, a wiring fault, or a power surge that has disrupted the motor drive circuit. On some Indesit models F01 also appears when the motor itself has drawn an abnormal current.

Step-by-step

1
Unplug the machine and wait a full 10 minutes
The motor control circuit requires a complete power discharge to reset after detecting a drive fault
2
Plug back in immediately and start a short 30-degree programme without leaving the machine on standby first
A cold start allows the motor control module to reinitialise cleanly
3
Check the mains socket is working correctly by plugging in another appliance
A power surge or intermittent supply can trigger F01 without any fault in the machine itself
4
If F01 reappears immediately on every attempt do not run further cycles and proceed to the diagnostic steps
Diagnostic

Symptoms to look for

  1. Machine will not start any programme
  2. Drum rotates erratically or at incorrect speeds
  3. Machine starts then stops immediately with F01 displayed
  4. Error appears immediately after selecting a programme

Diagnostic steps

Time 30–60 minutes
Skill Professional may be required
Perform a full power discharge

Unplug the machine and hold the power button for 10 seconds to discharge residual power from the control board capacitors. Leave unplugged for a full 10 minutes. Plug back in and try a cold start.

A brief unplug of a few seconds is often not sufficient to reset the motor control circuit on Indesit machines — the full 10-minute discharge is important for a proper reinitialisation.
Access the motor control board

With the machine completely unplugged, remove the rear panel by undoing the screws around its edge. The motor control board (sometimes called the power module) is separate from the main PCB — on most Indesit washing machines it is mounted near the motor at the lower rear of the machine in a grey or black plastic housing. Photograph all wiring connections before touching anything.

Wait at least 2 minutes after unplugging before touching any board connections. Capacitors on the motor control board retain charge briefly after the mains is disconnected.
Inspect and reseat all wiring connectors

Locate every connector between the motor control board and the main control board, and between the motor control board and the motor. Each connector must be pressed firmly and evenly until it seats fully. Pull each one apart and press firmly back in. Look for any pins that are bent, corroded, or have pulled back into the connector housing.

The multi-pin connector linking the main board to the motor control board is the most common point of failure — it can work loose from vibration over time.
Check for burnt components or moisture

Examine the motor control board surface for discoloured, bulging, or burnt components, scorch marks on the board surface, or evidence of moisture ingress.

Do not attempt to repair individual components on the board. A board with visible burn damage must be replaced as a complete unit.
Check the motor wiring loom

Trace the wiring from the motor control board to the drum motor. Look for chafed insulation where the loom passes near sharp metal edges, pinched wires, or connectors not fully engaged on the motor terminals.

Confirm the machine is unplugged before touching any motor wiring. The motor capacitor can retain a brief charge after disconnection.
Reassemble and run a test

Reconnect all wiring firmly, replace the rear panel and run a 30-degree programme from a cold start. If F01 does not reappear run two further cycles to confirm stability.

If F01 clears for a few cycles then returns, the fault is an intermittent connection worsened by vibration — the wiring loom or connector needs replacing rather than reseating.

When to call an engineer

  • Visible burnt components or scorch marks on the motor control board
  • F01 persists on every cycle after full 10-minute discharge and connector reseating
  • Motor control board has been exposed to water ingress
  • Motor wiring continuity confirmed but board still not communicating — board needs replacing
Common questions

Frequently asked questions

What is the motor control board and why does it cause F01?
The motor control board converts the mains supply into the variable-frequency power needed to control motor speed during different cycle phases. F01 means this board has detected an internal fault or lost communication with the main control board.
Can a power surge cause F01?
Yes — voltage spikes are one of the most common causes. If F01 appeared after a thunderstorm or power cut, a full 10-minute reset may resolve it.
Is it safe to keep using the machine after F01?
No — the motor is not being controlled correctly and the machine could behave unpredictably. Do not use it until the fault is resolved.
How do I know if the motor control board needs replacing rather than just reseating its connectors?
If all connectors are firmly seated, there is no visible wiring fault, and F01 appears on every cycle immediately after a full reset, the board itself has failed and needs replacing.
