What this error means

Aquastop triggered — flood protection system has activated

The E23 or F23 error means the machine's Aquastop flood protection system has detected water in the base of the machine and has shut off the water supply automatically. This is a safety feature, not a machine malfunction. The most common cause is a leaking hose, a dripping door seal, a failed pump seal, or an overfilling fault that has allowed water to reach the base tray.

Step-by-step

1
Turn off the water supply tap behind the machine immediately
The Aquastop system will already have done this but confirm it manually
2
Unplug the machine from the mains
3
Do not tilt or move the machine immediately as this can spread the water in the base tray and cause further issues
4
Open the machine door if possible and check whether the drum itself is overfull or whether there are any visible signs of a leak
Diagnostic

Symptoms to look for

  1. Machine stops mid-cycle with E23 or F23 and will not fill again
  2. Water visible on the floor around the base of the machine
  3. Machine completes a drain but then will not take on new water
  4. Aquastop light or indicator illuminated on the control panel

Turn off water and power

Turn the water supply tap fully clockwise (closed) and unplug the machine from the mains socket. These are essential safety steps before any inspection.

Do not move or tilt the machine until you have confirmed where the water came from. Moving it too quickly can cause the water in the base tray to spill out or reach electrical components.
Locate the source of the water

Unscrew the machine's rear panel and access panel if fitted, or carefully tilt the machine back about 10 to 15 degrees to allow water in the base tray to drain toward the front. Use a torch to look inside the base for signs of where the water originated — check around the door seal, the pump area, the drum shaft seal, and all hose connection points.

Place towels around the base of the machine before tilting it. Even a small amount of water in the tray can make a mess on the floor.
Inspect the inlet hose and connections

With the machine pulled out from the wall, examine the full length of the inlet hose from the tap to the machine. Look for cracks, splits, loose fittings, or pinhole leaks. Feel the hose with dry hands. Check that both ends are firmly attached.

Even a very slow drip from a loose connection can accumulate in the base tray over time and eventually trigger the Aquastop.
Inspect the door seal

Open the door and examine the full circumference of the rubber door seal. Look for cracks, tears, holes, or any area where the seal has pulled away from its groove. Push your fingers gently into the fold of the seal and feel for moisture or soft areas indicating damage.

Small tears in the lower section of the door seal can leak a thin stream of water during a full drum cycle — enough to reach the base tray but not obviously visible from outside.
Check the pump seal and drain area

Using your torch, look at the area around the pump at the base of the machine. Look for water staining, mineral deposits, or active drips around the pump body, the pump housing, and where the hoses connect to the pump.

Do not touch any wiring or electrical connectors in the base of the machine until you have confirmed the area is completely dry and the machine has been unplugged.
Dry the base tray and reset the sensor

Once you have identified and resolved the source of the leak, dry the base tray as thoroughly as possible using dry cloths or a sponge. The Aquastop float switch in the tray must sit in its normal position before the machine will operate. Some machines require tilting forward slightly to allow remaining water to escape through a drain hole at the front.

Leave the machine to air dry for several hours before plugging it back in. A damp base tray can re-trigger the Aquastop on the next fill.

When to call an engineer

  • Leak is internal — from the pump seal, drum seal, or a cracked hose fitting inside the cabinet
  • Aquastop float switch is stuck raised even after the base tray has been dried
  • Door seal has a visible tear or has separated from the machine body
  • Source of the leak cannot be identified after a full visual inspection
Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Does E23 mean the machine is broken?
Not necessarily — it means the flood protection has done its job. If the leak is from a hose or door seal you may be able to resolve it yourself. A pump seal or internal leak may need an engineer.
Will the Aquastop reset itself?
No — the base tray must be completely dry and the float switch must return to its resting position before the machine will allow water to enter. You must dry the tray manually.
Is it safe to run the machine again once the base is dry?
Only if you have identified and fixed the source of the water. Running the machine without resolving the leak will re-trigger the Aquastop.
Can the Aquastop float switch itself fail?
Yes — if the float switch becomes stuck in the raised position even after the tray is dry, it will continue to block the water supply. A stuck or faulty float switch needs to be replaced.
