What does the Samsung 5E/5C error code mean?

Your Samsung washing machine has stopped mid-cycle, the drum is full of water, and a code is flashing. Whether it looks like 5E, 5C, or SE, they all mean the same thing: The machine cannot drain the water.

5C vs. 5E: What’s the Difference, Technically, they are the same!

  1. 5E / SE: Usually found on older Samsung models.
  2. 5C: The standard code for newer Samsung models.
  3. The “S” Confusion: Because of the digital font, many users read the “5” as an “S.” If you’re searching for an “SE error,” you’re in the right place.

Step-By-Step: How to Clear the Drainage Error

1. The Emergency Drain (The “Wet” Step)

Before you can fix the problem, you have to get the water out.

  1. Locate the access panel on the bottom-front right of the machine.
  2. Place a shallow bowl and a towel down.
  3. Pull out the small emergency drain tube, remove the plug, and let the water flow into the bowl. Warning: The water may be hot!

2. Clean the Debris Filter (The “Dirty” Step)

This is the cause of 90% of 5E/5C errors.

  1. Once the water is out, unscrew the large Debris Filter (the round plastic handle) counter-clockwise.
  2. Check for: Coins, hairpins, bra wires, or a massive buildup of lint.
  3. Rinse the filter under a tap and use a flashlight to look inside the pump housing for any trapped objects.

3. Inspect the Drain Hose

If the filter is clean, the blockage is further down the line.

  1. Check the grey corrugated hose at the back of the machine. Is it kinked or squashed against the wall?
  2. The Standpipe Rule: Ensure the drain hose isn’t pushed too far down into the wall pipe (the standpipe). It should only go in about 15 cm (6 inches). If it’s too deep, it can create a “siphon effect” that confuses the machine.

When the “Easy Fix” Doesn’t Work

If the filter is clean and the hose is straight, but the 5E/5C code persists, you likely have one of the following hardware issues:

  1. Faulty Drain Pump: If the machine makes a loud grinding noise (or no noise at all) during the drain cycle, the pump motor has likely failed.
  2. Pressure Switch Fault: The part that tells the machine “the water is gone” is broken, so it thinks it’s still full.

How to Reset a Samsung Washer after an 5E Error

Once you’ve cleaned the filter:

  1. Plug the machine back in.
  2. Select the ‘Rinse + Spin’ cycle.
  3. Press Start. If the water drains and the cycle completes, you’ve fixed it!
