What this error means

Unbalanced load — the drum cannot reach spin speed safely

The UE error means the machine has detected that the laundry load is too unevenly distributed in the drum to spin safely at the target speed. The machine will attempt to redistribute the load by tumbling at low speed before retrying the spin. If it cannot achieve balance after multiple attempts, it displays UE and stops. This is a protective feature — an out-of-balance drum spinning at full speed can cause structural damage to the machine.

Step-by-step

1
Open the door and manually redistribute the laundry
Pull items apart from each other and spread them evenly around the drum
2
Remove any single large item such as a duvet, bath mat, or heavy jumper
These absorb water unevenly and are the most common cause of UE
3
Check that the machine is sitting level on the floor
A machine that rocks during spin causes persistent UE errors regardless of load balance
4
Close the door and restart the spin cycle
Diagnostic

Symptoms to look for

  1. Spin cycle starts then stops repeatedly before reaching full speed
  2. Excessive vibration or banging during the spin phase before UE appears
  3. Machine completes the wash but will not spin at the end of the programme
  4. UE appears on every spin cycle regardless of load size or type

How to fix it

Redistribute the laundry manually

Open the door and remove all items. Shake each one out individually to loosen them, then reload loosely one item at a time, alternating small and large items evenly around the drum. A balanced load means weight is distributed as evenly as possible around the circumference.

Never bundle items tightly together when loading — pack them loosely in a single layer around the drum. A tightly packed ball of wet laundry will always unbalance.
Remove single bulky items

A single large absorbent item — a duvet insert, a heavy bath mat, a thick jumper, or a pair of jeans washed alone — absorbs water unevenly and creates a significant weight imbalance. Wash bulky single items with 2 or 3 smaller items to help counterbalance them, or use the Samsung Bedding or Delicate programme which uses a dedicated low-speed spin designed for these items.

Duvet inserts and pillows should ideally be washed in pairs to balance the load. Check the care label — some should only be dry-cleaned.
Check the machine is level

Use a spirit level on top of the machine and check in both directions. Adjust the four feet — turn anti-clockwise to raise, clockwise to lower — until the machine is stable with no rocking. Tighten each foot's locking nut once level.

A machine that is even slightly off-level will never distribute its load correctly during spin and will produce persistent UE errors. All four feet must be in firm, even contact with the floor.
Check the floor surface

If the machine is on a smooth tiled or wooden floor, vibration during spin can cause it to walk and rock. Anti-vibration pads placed under all four feet significantly reduce movement and improve load balance.

Anti-vibration pads are widely available and inexpensive. They are particularly useful on upper-floor installations where floor flex worsens the effect.
Check the transit bolts have been removed

If the machine is newly installed, the red or yellow transit bolts at the rear of the machine must be removed before use. These bolts lock the drum for transport and prevent it from moving freely — the machine will UE on every spin cycle with them in place. Check the rear panel for any plastic-capped bolts that were not removed during installation.

Running the machine with transit bolts in place will cause severe vibration and can damage the drum suspension, bearings, and outer tub. Remove them immediately if present.
Restart with a reduced load

Remove a third of the load and restart the spin. If UE clears, the load was simply too large for the drum to balance. Samsung recommends filling the drum to no more than three-quarters of its capacity for spin programmes.

Wet laundry is significantly heavier than dry — a drum that appears only half-full when dry can be overloaded when wet.

When to call an engineer

  • Drum suspension springs are visibly stretched, detached, or broken
  • Shock absorbers feel loose, have lost resistance, or are leaking fluid
  • UE persists on every cycle including with a single small item — bearing or suspension fault
  • Transit bolts were present and machine has been run — drum suspension damage may have occurred
Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Is UE a fault with the machine or with the laundry?
In most cases UE is caused by the load, not the machine. However, a machine that is not level or that has worn drum suspension springs will display UE even with well-balanced loads.
Why does my Samsung show UE on every spin even with a balanced load?
Check that the machine is perfectly level, the transit bolts have been removed, and the drum suspension springs and shock absorbers are not worn. A machine that rocks at all during spin will consistently fail to balance.
Can UE damage the washing machine?
The UE error is specifically designed to prevent damage — the machine stops rather than spin an unbalanced load. Repeated UE events caused by worn suspension components will eventually cause bearing wear if not addressed.
Does UE mean I need an engineer?
Not usually. Levelling the machine and adjusting the load resolves the vast majority of UE errors without any repair.
