What this error means

Motor current fault — the motor has drawn an abnormal current level

The 8E error means the motor control system has detected that the drum motor is drawing a current outside the expected operating range — either too high or too low. This is typically caused by an overloaded drum, a foreign object jamming the drum or motor, worn or failed motor components, or a fault in the motor control board. Samsung Direct Drive models produce 8E when the Hall sensor or motor winding fault is detected.

Step-by-step

1
Unplug the machine and wait a full 10 minutes
The motor has a thermal cut-out that trips on overcurrent and must cool fully before it will reset
2
Open the door and try rotating the drum slowly by hand in both directions
It should turn with smooth, even resistance
3
Remove at least half the load
An overloaded or unevenly loaded drum is the most common trigger for 8E
4
Check inside the drum and around the door seal lip for any item that may have become trapped between the drum and the outer tub
5
Plug back in and run a Spin Only cycle with no laundry to test
Diagnostic

Symptoms to look for

  1. Machine starts a spin cycle then stops immediately with 8E
  2. Drum rotates briefly then judders to a stop
  3. Abnormal noise from the motor area — grinding or buzzing — before the fault appears
  4. 8E displayed during the spin phase only, not during wash tumble

Diagnostic steps

Allow the motor to cool and reset

Unplug the machine and leave the door open for a minimum of 15 minutes. The motor's thermal protection cutout requires this time to reset fully. Plug back in and try a Spin Only cycle with an empty drum.

If 8E clears with an empty drum but returns when a load is added, the motor is operating at its current limits — worn components are causing it to struggle under normal load. This will worsen over time.
Check drum rotation by hand

With the machine unplugged, place your hand inside the drum and rotate it slowly clockwise then anti-clockwise for a full turn each way. The resistance should be smooth and even throughout. Any grinding, catching, or complete seizure indicates a physical obstruction or a mechanical fault such as failed drum bearings.

Do not force the drum if it feels seized. Forcing against a bearing failure or a trapped foreign object can cause significant additional damage.
Check for trapped foreign objects

Shine a torch through the drum perforations and look carefully into the gap between the drum and the outer tub. Coins, bra underwires, buttons, and small items frequently pass through the drum holes and jam against the drum outer surface. Use long-nose pliers or a flexible grabber tool to retrieve anything visible.

Do not reach bare-handed into the drum-tub gap. The drum edge can cause cuts. Use a torch before inserting any tool.
Access and inspect the motor

With the machine unplugged, remove the rear panel. On Samsung Direct Drive models the motor is attached directly to the back of the drum — there is no drive belt. On belt-drive models, check the belt is present, correctly seated on both pulleys, and under tension. On Direct Drive models, inspect the rotor and stator for visible damage — burnt windings appear as dark, discoloured sections on the coil wire.

Wait 60 seconds after unplugging before touching motor terminals. The motor capacitor on belt-drive models retains a charge briefly after disconnection.
Check the Hall sensor on Direct Drive models

Samsung Direct Drive motors use a Hall effect sensor mounted at the rear of the motor to monitor rotor position. A failed Hall sensor produces 8E. With the machine unplugged, locate the small Hall sensor PCB on the motor stator — it is connected by a thin multi-wire harness. Check the connector is firmly seated and the harness is not chafed or pinched.

A faulty Hall sensor is a common cause of 8E on Samsung Direct Drive machines over 4 years old. The sensor is a low-cost part and straightforward to replace.
Inspect motor wiring connectors

Trace the wiring from the motor to the main harness and motor control board. Check that all connectors are firmly seated, no wires are chafed against the drum tub or cabinet edge, and no terminals are corroded. Disconnect and firmly reseat the main motor connector.

Confirm the machine is unplugged before touching any motor wiring.

When to call an engineer

  • Hall sensor on Direct Drive motor reads open circuit or produces no signal
  • Motor winding shows an open circuit or short to earth on a multimeter
  • Drum bearings are rough or grinding — bearing replacement required
  • 8E persists on every spin attempt after motor reset and load reduction
Common questions

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between 8E and 3E on a Samsung washing machine?
Both relate to the motor, but 8E specifically means the motor has drawn an abnormal current — too high (indicating a mechanical overload or short circuit) or too low (indicating an open circuit or Hall sensor failure). 3E indicates the motor is not rotating at all.
Can overloading alone cause 8E?
Yes — an overloaded drum creates excessive mechanical resistance, causing the motor to draw a higher current than the control board allows. Reduce the load and retry before investigating components.
What is a Hall sensor and can I replace it myself?
The Hall sensor monitors the motor's rotor position to control speed and direction. It is a small, inexpensive PCB part and is one of the more straightforward motor repairs on Samsung Direct Drive machines.
Is 8E dangerous?
The fault itself is not immediately dangerous but the machine should not be run while the cause is unresolved — abnormal motor currents indicate either a mechanical or electrical problem that will worsen.
