The 3E error means the motor control system has commanded the drum motor to rotate but has not received confirmation that rotation has occurred. On Samsung Direct Drive models this means no signal from the Hall sensor. On belt-drive models it means no TACHO signal confirming motor rotation. Check drum rotation by hand

With the machine unplugged, place your hand inside the drum and rotate it slowly clockwise for a full turn then anti-clockwise. The resistance should be smooth and consistent — similar to turning against a light spring. Any grinding, sharp catching, or complete seizure indicates a physical obstruction or a mechanical fault.

Never force a seized drum. Doing so can damage the drum bearings, spider arm, or motor mounting and significantly increase repair costs.
Allow the motor thermal cutout to reset

Leave the machine fully unplugged with the door open for 15 minutes minimum. The motor's internal thermal protection requires complete cooling to reset. Plug back in and try an empty Spin Only cycle.

If 3E only appears after a long hot programme and clears after cooling, the motor is overheating — this is most commonly caused by worn brushes on belt-drive models generating additional heat, or a failing Hall sensor on Direct Drive models producing inefficient control signals.
Check for items trapped between drum and outer tub

Shine a torch through the drum perforations and look into the gap between the drum and the outer tub. Coins, underwires, and small items frequently jam here. Use long-nose pliers to retrieve anything visible.

Use a torch before inserting any tool into the drum-tub gap. Sharp trapped objects can cause cuts.
Inspect the drive belt (belt-drive models only)

With the machine unplugged, remove the rear panel. The drive belt loops around the large drum pulley and the small motor pulley. Check whether it is present, correctly seated in both pulley grooves, and under firm tension. A snapped or slipped belt produces 3E because the motor runs freely but the drum does not move, generating no TACHO signal.

Only access the rear panel with the machine completely unplugged. Wait 30 seconds before touching motor connections.
Inspect the Hall sensor (Direct Drive models)

Samsung Direct Drive motors use a Hall effect sensor to confirm rotor rotation. It is a small PCB mounted at the rear of the stator, connected by a thin multi-wire harness. With the machine unplugged, check that the Hall sensor connector is firmly seated and the harness is not chafed, kinked, or pinched between moving parts.

A loose Hall sensor connector is a very common cause of 3E on Direct Drive Samsung machines. Always check this before assuming the motor has failed.
Check motor brushes (belt-drive models)

Each brush holder on the side of the motor houses a spring-loaded carbon rod. Press the tab and slide each holder out. The carbon rod must be at least 5 to 7 mm long. Rods shorter than this have worn out. Replace both brushes together — both left and right — even if only one is below minimum length.

Worn brushes are the most common cause of 3E on belt-drive Samsung machines over 4 years old. They are inexpensive parts available for most models.
