What this error means

Unbalanced load — the drum cannot reach spin speed safely

The UE error means the machine has detected that the laundry is too unevenly distributed in the drum to spin safely. LG machines will attempt to redistribute the load automatically by tumbling at low speed before retrying. If balance cannot be achieved after several attempts, UE is displayed. This is a protective feature — an out-of-balance drum spinning at full speed can permanently damage the machine.

Step-by-step

1
Open the door and manually pull items apart from each other
Laundry clumps together when wet and must be separated before the machine can balance it
2
Remove any single large item such as a duvet, bath mat, or heavy jumper
Single absorbent items soak up water unevenly and are the most common cause of UE
3
Check the machine is sitting level on the floor — rock it gently with both hands
A machine that moves at all during spin will never balance its load correctly
4
Reload items loosely and evenly around the drum and restart the spin
Even distribution around the full circumference of the drum is what the machine needs
Diagnostic

Symptoms to look for

  1. Spin cycle starts then stops repeatedly before reaching full speed
  2. Excessive vibration or loud banging before UE appears
  3. Machine completes the wash but will not enter the spin phase
  4. UE appears on every spin cycle regardless of load size

How to fix it

Redistribute the laundry manually

Open the door and remove all items. Shake each one out individually to loosen them, then reload loosely one item at a time, placing items evenly around the drum. Avoid bundling items together — pack them in a loose, single layer.

A balanced load means weight is distributed as evenly as possible around the full circumference of the drum. The machine needs this to accelerate to spin speed smoothly without vibrating.
Remove single bulky items

A single large absorbent item — a duvet, a heavy bath mat, a thick jumper — absorbs water unevenly and creates a significant weight imbalance. Wash bulky items with 2 or 3 smaller items to counterbalance them, or use the LG Bedding programme which uses a slower dedicated spin for large items.

LG recommends washing duvets in pairs to maintain balance. Check the care label — some duvets should only be dry-cleaned.
Level the machine

Use a spirit level on top of the machine and check in both directions. Adjust all four feet — turn anti-clockwise to raise, clockwise to lower — until the machine is stable with no rocking at any corner. Tighten each locking nut firmly against the base once level.

Even a slight tilt causes persistent UE regardless of how well the load is balanced. All four feet must be in firm contact with the floor simultaneously.
Check for transit bolts on a new installation

If the machine was recently installed, check that all transit bolts have been removed from the rear panel. These yellow or red bolts lock the drum for transport. A machine with transit bolts in place will vibrate violently and display UE on every spin cycle.

Running the machine with transit bolts installed will damage the drum suspension, bearings, and outer tub. Remove them immediately if present.
Check the floor surface

If the machine is on a smooth tiled or laminate floor, vibration during spin can cause it to walk and rock. Place anti-vibration pads under all four feet to eliminate movement.

Anti-vibration pads are inexpensive and particularly effective on upper-floor installations where floor flex amplifies drum vibration.
Reduce the load size and retry

Remove a third of the load and restart the spin. If UE clears, the load was too large for the drum to balance. LG recommends loading to no more than three-quarters of the drum capacity for spin programmes.

Wet laundry is significantly heavier than dry — a drum that looks only half full when dry may be effectively overloaded when saturated.

When to call an engineer

  • Drum suspension springs are visibly stretched, detached, or broken
  • Shock absorbers are loose, have lost resistance, or are leaking
  • UE persists with a single small item — suspension or bearing fault suspected
  • Transit bolts were present and machine has been run — suspension damage may have occurred
Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Is UE a fault with the machine or the laundry?
In most cases UE is caused by the load, not the machine. However, a machine that is not perfectly level or has worn suspension springs will display UE even with well-balanced loads.
Why does my LG show UE on every spin even with a small load?
Check that the machine is perfectly level, the transit bolts have been removed, and the drum suspension springs are not worn or detached. A machine that rocks at all during spin will consistently fail to balance.
Can UE damage the washing machine?
The UE error prevents damage — the machine stops rather than spin an out-of-balance load. However, repeated UE events caused by worn suspension components will gradually cause bearing wear.
Does UE mean I need an engineer?
Not usually. Levelling the machine and adjusting the load resolves the vast majority of UE errors without any repair needed.
