What this error means

Drain fault — the washing machine cannot empty water from the drum within the expected time.

The E20 error on an AEG washing machine means the machine has failed to drain the drum within the programmed time window. AEG machines monitor the drainage process continuously and will display E20 if water has not been removed successfully. The most common causes are a blocked or dirty pump filter, a kinked or obstructed drain hose, a foreign object jamming the pump impeller, or a faulty drain pump motor. A blocked household standpipe or sink waste will also prevent drainage and produce this code.

Step-by-step

1
Unplug the machine from the mains before doing anything
This is essential for your safety before you touch any part of the pump system
2
Open the small access flap at the bottom front of the machine and place several towels and a shallow tray underneath
Water will escape when the filter is opened so prepare before you begin
3
Slowly turn the filter cap anti-clockwise by a quarter turn first to release trapped water as a controlled trickle into your tray
Turning too fast will cause a sudden rush of water
4
Unscrew the cap fully and clear all coins, hair, lint, and debris from the filter body and the filter housing cavity, then check the drain hose at the rear for kinks
5
Refit the filter firmly and run a Spin or Drain programme to confirm whether the blockage has been fully cleared

Symptoms to look for

  1. Water clearly visible in the drum at the end of a wash or rinse cycle
  2. Machine stops mid-programme with water still remaining inside the drum
  3. Gurgling, straining, or loud humming noise from the pump area during the drain phase
  4. E20 displayed near the end of a wash, rinse, or spin phase

How to fix it

Time 25–45 minutes

Prepare for water spillage before you start

Unplug the machine from the mains — this is not optional and must be done before any hands-on work. Lay several old towels across the floor in front of the machine and place a shallow baking tray or wide bowl directly beneath the pump filter access flap. Even after a failed drain attempt there can be three to five litres of water remaining inside the drum and hose.

Never attempt to open the pump filter or touch any part of the pump system with the machine plugged in. The pump motor can activate unexpectedly if power is present and will release a sudden uncontrolled rush of hot water at high pressure.
Access and drain through the filter

At the bottom front of the machine open the small rectangular access flap — it usually pulls open with a tab or can be levered gently with a flat coin. Position your tray directly under the round filter cap. Turn the cap anti-clockwise by a quarter turn only to begin releasing water as a slow, controlled trickle. Empty the tray as it fills, then continue turning the cap anti-clockwise until it comes free fully. Pull the filter out completely. If the machine is equipped with an emergency drain hose use this to drain the water before opening the filter housing.

AEG machines stopped mid-wash retain hot water at wash temperature. If the machine was stopped during a hot cycle wait five to ten minutes for the water to cool slightly before starting the drain process.
Clean the pump filter and housing

Rinse the filter body under warm running water and scrub the mesh with an old toothbrush to clear all lint, hair, and debris. Reach carefully into the filter housing cavity with a torch and feel around the pump entrance for any trapped objects — coins, hair grips, and buttons frequently reach this area.

Feel slowly and carefully — sharp objects including hair grips, broken glass fragments, underwire, and metal buttons can reach the pump housing and will cause cuts if you insert your fingers without checking first. Always use a torch before placing your hand inside. Long tweezers can be useful to reach inside to remove trapped debris.
Inspect the pump impeller

Shine a torch into the empty filter cavity. At the rear you will see the impeller — a small plastic rotor. Try to rotate it gently with one finger. It should turn with smooth, light resistance. If it is stiff, will not move at all, or catches repeatedly in one position, there is a foreign object jammed in the pump body or the impeller is cracked or broken.

A thin sock or small piece of fabric tangled around the impeller is one of the most frequently found causes of E20 on AEG machines. It is not visible from the filter side and the pump must be removed to clear it.
Inspect the drain hose

Trace the corrugated drain hose from the machine connection to the standpipe or sink waste. Straighten all kinks and bends along its full length. The open end of the hose must be inserted no more than 15 centimetres into the standpipe and must not be sealed against the pipe walls — air must be able to enter around the hose for drainage to work correctly. The lowest point of the hose must be at least 60 centimetres above the floor.

A drain hose inserted too deeply into the standpipe creates a continuous syphon effect. This causes the machine to drain continuously during the fill phase and also prevents correct drainage, triggering E20 on repeated cycles.
Run a drain programme to confirm the repair

Refit the filter and tighten it firmly clockwise until it stops. Plug the machine back in and select the Spin or Drain programme. You should hear the pump motor activate within seconds of starting and water should begin flowing clearly from the drain hose.

If the pump hums loudly but no water moves at all, there is still a blockage inside the pump body that has not been cleared from the filter side. The pump will need to be removed for a thorough internal inspection.

When to call an engineer

  • Pump impeller is cracked or will not rotate by hand after the filter has been removed
  • Pump motor hums continuously but produces no water movement — motor winding has failed
  • E20 returns immediately after filter cleaning and drain hose inspection
  • Burning smell or scorch marks visible in the pump compartment beneath the machine
Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Can I drain the drum manually when E20 stops the machine mid-cycle?
Yes — unplug the machine first, then place a tray under the filter panel and very slowly unscrew the filter cap anti-clockwise to drain water in a controlled flow. Have plenty of towels ready as there may be several litres inside. If the machine is equipped with an emergency drain hose use this to drain the water before opening the filter housing.
How often should I clean the AEG pump filter?
AEG recommends checking and cleaning the pump filter at least once a month. If you regularly wash heavily soiled loads, pet bedding, or sandy items, clean it every two weeks to prevent blockages developing.
Why does E20 reappear even though I cleaned the filter recently?
A foreign object may have since passed through the drum and become lodged in the pump impeller, or the drain hose has developed a new kink. Check both thoroughly before assuming the pump motor has failed.
Can a persistently blocked filter damage the pump permanently?
Yes — running the pump repeatedly against a blocked filter overloads the motor windings and can burn them out over time. Always investigate and clear E20 before running another wash cycle.
