What this error means

Water fill timeout — the machine started filling but did not reach the required level within the allowed time.

The E11 error on an AEG washing machine means the machine began filling with water but failed to reach the required drum level within the programmed time limit. Unlike E10 which indicates no water entered at all, E11 means water is present but the flow rate was too slow to complete the fill within the allowed window. The most common causes are a partially open water tap, a partially blocked inlet filter mesh, a kinked inlet hose, or low water supply pressure. A slow-to-open or partially failing inlet solenoid valve can also produce E11.

Step-by-step

1
Check the water supply tap behind the machine and ensure it is turned fully anti-clockwise to the fully open position
a tap that is only partially open is the single most common cause of E11
2
Trace the full length of the inlet hose and straighten any kinks or bends
even one tight kink in the hose can halve the flow rate and prevent the machine from filling within its time window
3
Turn the tap off, disconnect the inlet hose from the machine, and clean the mesh filter inside the inlet port under warm running water with a toothbrush to remove limescale and debris
4
Reconnect everything securely, open the tap fully, and run a Cotton 40-degree programme
the machine should fill noticeably within the first 60 to 90 seconds

Symptoms to look for

  1. Machine begins filling but then pauses and displays E11 before the drum is full
  2. Programme starts but the fill phase takes noticeably longer than it used to
  3. Machine operates normally on short programmes but displays E11 on longer programmes requiring more water
  4. E11 appears during the fill phase of the first or second cycle of the day

How to fix it

Confirm the water tap is fully open

Locate the cold water isolation tap on the supply pipe behind or beneath the machine. Turn it as far anti-clockwise as it will go. If you are uncertain whether it moved at all, close it fully clockwise first, then reopen it fully anti-clockwise so you know it has completed its full travel.

Note that E11 specifically means water started entering — this means the tap is at least partially open. Even a quarter turn restriction is enough to cause a fill timeout on programmes that require a large volume of water.
Straighten the inlet hose completely

Pull the machine carefully forward from the wall and run your hand along the entire hose from the tap fitting to the machine connection, feeling for and straightening every kink, sharp bend, and section compressed by the weight of the machine or the cabinet.

Always grip the machine body when pulling it forward, not the inlet hose or drain hose. Pulling the hose can loosen the connection and cause a water leak behind the machine.
Clean the inlet filter mesh

Turn the water supply tap fully off. Place a towel under the hose connection at the back of the machine. Unscrew the inlet hose coupling anti-clockwise until it comes free — water will drip from the hose as the seal breaks. Look into the machine inlet port and remove the small mesh filter using tweezers. Rinse it under warm running water and scrub all mesh surfaces with a toothbrush to clear limescale, grit, and debris. Refit the filter and tighten the hose coupling firmly.

Never operate the machine without the inlet filter in place. Debris that passes through the valve will permanently damage or block the inlet valve seat.
Test the water supply flow rate independently

With the inlet hose disconnected from the machine, point the open end into a bucket and open the tap for three seconds. A strong, uninterrupted, full-bore flow should be clearly visible. A weak or restricted flow that partly explains the E11 fill timeout indicates a supply pressure problem at the property level that the machine cannot compensate for.

If your property water pressure is confirmed to be borderline low — around 0.5 bar — avoid using the washing machine at peak demand times such as early morning when other household appliances and neighbouring properties are drawing water simultaneously.
Inspect the solenoid inlet valve

With the machine completely unplugged and the water supply turned off, remove the rear access panel. The inlet valve is the solenoid block where the inlet hose connects internally. Check the valve body for corrosion, cracking, or mineral deposits restricting the valve ports.

A solenoid valve that is slow to fully open — often due to mineral build-up on the plunger — allows water to enter but at a reduced rate that produces E11 on larger programmes requiring more water volume.

When to call an engineer

  • Water supply pressure confirmed adequate but E11 persists after inlet filter cleaning — inlet valve is failing
  • Solenoid valve coil reads open circuit on a multimeter — valve must be replaced
  • Valve opens correctly electrically but restricts flow mechanically — plunger damaged or seized with mineral deposits
  • Wiring to the inlet valve is damaged, corroded, or the connector has separated
Common questions

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between E10 and E11 on an AEG washing machine?
E10 means no water entered within the fill time — the machine received nothing at all. E11 means water did enter but the flow was too slow to reach the required level before the time limit expired. Both share the same common causes but E11 specifically points to restricted rather than absent water flow.
Can low water pressure cause E11 even if everything else is working correctly?
Yes — AEG washing machines require a minimum of 0.5 bar to fill reliably within the programmed time window. Properties with consistently low pressure may experience E11 regularly even with a fully open tap and a clean filter.
How do I prevent E11 from occurring regularly?
Clean the inlet filter mesh every three months, run a descale cycle every three to six months to prevent mineral build-up in the valve, and ensure the water tap remains fully open at all times during machine use.
Is E11 a sign the inlet valve is about to fail?
It can be — a valve with mineral deposits on its plunger opens slowly and restricts flow progressively over time, eventually failing completely. If E11 persists after cleaning the filter and confirming full water pressure, the valve should be tested and replaced if necessary.
