What this error means

Drainage issue — the drain pump is running but water is not leaving the machine quickly enough.

The E21 error on an AEG washing machine indicates the machine has detected that drainage is occurring too slowly — the pump is running but water is not being removed at the rate the control board expects. This is a flow rate fault rather than a complete drainage failure. The most common causes are a partially blocked pump filter, a drain hose that is incorrectly positioned or partially kinked, a household standpipe or sink waste that is beginning to block, or a pump impeller that is partially obstructed. A pump motor that is running but losing efficiency due to wear will also produce E21.

Step-by-step

1
Unplug the machine before starting
Safety comes first before touching any part of the pump or filter system
2
Open the access flap at the bottom front of the machine, place towels and a shallow tray underneath, and slowly release water by turning the filter cap anti-clockwise by a quarter turn before unscrewing it fully
3
Remove the filter and clean it thoroughly under running water using a toothbrush
Even a partial blockage in the filter is enough to slow drainage and trigger E21
4
Check the drain hose at the rear for any kinks or bends and ensure the standpipe insertion is no more than 15 cm deep
5
Refit the filter firmly and run a Spin Only programme to test whether drainage speed has returned to normal
Diagnostic

Symptoms to look for

  1. Machine takes noticeably longer to drain than it used to
  2. Pump sound continues for longer than expected during drain and spin phases
  3. Water drains but very slowly — some water remains in the drum at the end of a programme
  4. E21 appears at the end of a wash or rinse cycle

How to fix it

Prepare safely before starting

Unplug the machine from the mains completely. Lay towels across the floor in front of the machine and place a shallow tray beneath the filter access flap. Even though E21 indicates slow drainage rather than no drainage, water will still be present in the drum and hose.

Do not begin any inspection of the filter or hose system with the machine plugged in. The pump can activate during programme start-up and will release hot water under pressure without warning.
Remove and thoroughly clean the pump filter

Open the access flap and position your tray beneath the filter cap. Turn the cap anti-clockwise by a quarter turn to begin releasing water slowly into the tray. Empty the tray, then continue unscrewing until the cap comes free. Pull the filter out fully. Rinse it under warm running water, scrubbing the mesh with a toothbrush to remove all lint, hair, fabric fibres, and debris. Reach into the filter housing cavity with a torch and clear any debris from around the pump entrance.

Partial blockages rather than complete ones are the most common cause of E21 specifically — water can still move but too slowly. Even a thin layer of compacted lint across the filter mesh is enough to reduce flow rate significantly.
Check the pump impeller rotation

Shine a torch into the empty filter cavity and locate the impeller at the rear. Rotate it gently with one finger. It should spin with smooth, even resistance through a full rotation. Any catching, grinding, or intermittent stiffness in one position indicates a partial obstruction around the impeller blades.

Always use a torch before inserting your finger. Feel slowly — sharp metal objects such as underwire, hair grips, and broken coins can reach the impeller area and cause cuts.
Inspect and reposition the drain hose

Trace the drain hose from the machine to the standpipe or sink waste connection. Straighten every kink, sharp bend, and compressed section along its full length. Confirm the hose end is inserted no more than 15 centimetres into the standpipe, is not sealed against the pipe walls, and that the hose has an upward loop reaching at least 60 centimetres above floor level before descending to the waste connection.

Confirm the sink waste trap and household drain are clear — a partially blocked household drain is a frequently overlooked cause of E21 because the pump is working correctly but draining against back-pressure from a restricted household outlet.
Check the pump outlet for partial obstruction

With the machine unplugged, remove the rear lower access panel if fitted. Inspect the short rubber hose between the pump outlet and the main drain hose for any collapse, kinking, or compression that would restrict the flow path out of the pump.

This hose is occasionally pinched when the machine is pushed back against a wall at an angle. Straighten it fully and ensure it has a gentle upward route from the pump before connecting to the main drain hose.

When to call an engineer

  • Pump impeller turns but only with significant stiffness — partial blockage inside the pump body that cannot be cleared from the filter side
  • E21 persists after filter cleaning, hose inspection, and household drain check — pump motor losing efficiency and requires replacement
  • Pump outlet hose has collapsed internally and cannot be straightened
  • Wiring to the pump is damaged or the connector is corroded
Common questions

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between E20 and E21 on an AEG washing machine?
E20 means the machine failed to drain completely — no or almost no water was removed. E21 means the pump is running and water is moving, but the flow rate is slower than the machine expects. E21 typically points to a partial obstruction rather than a complete blockage or pump failure.
Can a partially blocked household drain cause E21?
Yes — the AEG pump may be working correctly but forcing water against back-pressure from a slow or partially blocked sink waste or standpipe. Always check the household drain before investigating the machine itself.
Does E21 mean my pump is failing?
Not necessarily. The most common cause is a partial blockage in the filter or hose rather than pump wear. However, a pump motor that is running but losing efficiency due to age or wear can also produce E21 as it can no longer move water at the required rate.
How often should I clean the AEG pump filter to prevent E21?
Monthly cleaning is recommended as a minimum. In households with pets, sandy clothing, or heavily soiled loads, cleaning every two weeks will significantly reduce the risk of both E21 and E20.
