What this error means

Drain blockage — the machine has detected a blockage preventing water from leaving the drum.

The E24 error on an AEG washing machine indicates the control board has determined there is a blockage in the drainage system that is preventing water from being removed from the drum. The machine monitors the rate at which the water level drops during the drain phase and will display E24 when it detects no progress or progress that is far slower than expected due to an obstruction. The most common causes are a completely blocked pump filter, a foreign object jammed in the pump impeller, a severely kinked drain hose, or a blocked household standpipe or sink waste. A failed drain pump will also produce this code.

Step-by-step

1
Unplug the machine from the mains immediately
This is the first and most important safety step before any drainage work
2
Open the access flap at the lower front of the machine and prepare with plenty of towels and a shallow tray
There will be significant water to drain off
3
Slowly unscrew the filter cap anti-clockwise by a quarter turn first to release water as a controlled trickle into your tray, then unscrew fully and remove the filter
4
Clean all debris from the filter and housing thoroughly, check the drain hose for kinks, and refit the filter before running a Drain programme to test
Diagnostic

Symptoms to look for

  1. Machine stops mid-cycle with a full or partially full drum of water visible
  2. E24 displayed during the drain or spin phase of a programme
  3. Pump makes no noise during what should be a drain phase
  4. Water leaking from beneath the machine or around the door seal due to water level overload

How to fix it

Time 25–45 minutes
Skill Anyone
Prepare safely with plenty of towels and a tray

Unplug the machine from the mains. Because E24 indicates a complete or near-complete drainage blockage, there will almost certainly be a full drum of water still inside the machine. Lay old towels thickly across the floor and place the largest shallow tray you have directly under the filter access flap at the bottom front of the machine.

Never open the filter access area with the machine plugged in. The pump motor can activate unexpectedly and will release a high-pressure rush of hot water. Ensure children and pets are kept away from the work area during this process.
Drain the drum through the filter access point

Open the access flap and press your tray as close to the filter cap as possible. Turn the filter cap anti-clockwise by a single quarter turn — no further. Water will begin escaping as a controlled trickle. Allow your tray to fill, move it aside, empty it, and replace it beneath the cap. Continue in this way until no more water flows. Then unscrew the filter cap fully and pull it out.

If water flow stops before the drum appears empty, the remaining water may be above the pump inlet height. Tilt the machine very slightly forward by lifting from the rear — do this only a few centimetres with the machine unplugged — to help water reach the pump cavity.
Thoroughly clean the filter and housing

Rinse the filter under warm running water and scrub the mesh with an old toothbrush to remove every trace of lint, hair, fabric fibres, and solid debris. Reach into the filter housing with a torch and clear the pump entrance area completely.

Inspect the housing cavity carefully with a torch before inserting your fingers. E24 is associated with complete blockages rather than partial ones, meaning larger debris including small garments, socks, and solid items may have reached this area. Feel slowly and use long-nose pliers to remove visible objects.
Check and clear the pump impeller

Shine the torch into the housing. Locate the impeller — the plastic fan at the back of the cavity. Rotate it gently with one finger. It should spin freely with light, even resistance. If it will not move at all or is extremely stiff, there is a solid obstruction jammed around or through the impeller blades. Attempt to clear it carefully with a flexible grabber or tweezers.

Do not force the impeller if it is completely seized. Forcing can crack the impeller or the pump body. If the obstruction cannot be cleared from the filter access point, the pump must be removed for a full internal inspection.
Inspect the full length of the drain hose

Trace the drain hose from the machine rear to the household waste connection. Straighten every kink, bend, and compressed section. Check the standpipe or sink waste trap is clear — a blocked household drain will produce E24 on every cycle regardless of the machine internal condition.

Remove and rinse the sink waste trap if it is accessible. A build-up of grease and debris in the trap is a common cause of E24 that is completely unrelated to the machine itself but produces the same code.
Run a Drain programme to confirm the repair

Refit the filter cap firmly and clockwise until it stops. Plug the machine back in and run a Drain or Spin Only programme. Listen for the pump activating immediately after the programme starts. Water should begin flowing clearly from the drain hose within 30 seconds.

If the pump activates but produces no flow, or if it makes a loud rattling noise, there is still an obstruction inside the pump body that must be cleared by removing the pump.

When to call an engineer

  • Impeller completely seized and cannot be freed from the filter access point — pump must be removed
  • Pump motor runs but produces no water movement after blockage is cleared — motor winding has failed
  • E24 returns on the first cycle after a full filter clean — obstruction deeper in the pump body
  • Foreign object visible inside the pump body but unreachable from the filter cavity
Common questions

Frequently asked questions

How is E24 different from E20 on an AEG washing machine?
Both indicate drainage problems. E20 is the general drainage fault code indicating the machine failed to drain in the allowed time. E24 specifically indicates a blockage has been detected — a harder, more definitive obstruction of the drain path. In practice, both are investigated in the same way starting with the pump filter.
What is the most common thing found blocking an AEG pump filter with E24?
Coins, hair grips, underwire from bras, small buttons, and compacted lint are the most frequently found items. A single coin sitting across the pump entrance is enough to trigger E24.
Can I use the machine again before fully resolving E24?
No — the drum still contains water and the pump is blocked. Running another programme will simply fill the drum further and can cause water to overflow through the door seal or detergent drawer.
What should I do if I cannot clear the blockage from the filter access point?
If the impeller is completely seized or you cannot reach the obstruction, the pump will need to be accessed from inside the machine cabinet. At this point, calling a qualified appliance engineer is recommended.
