What does the Bosch E18 error code mean?

The Bosch E18 error code means your washing machine is not able to drain water within the expected time. When this happens, the cycle will usually stop mid-program and may leave water sitting in the drum.

In most cases, this is not a serious fault. The problem is usually caused by a restriction somewhere in the drainage system rather than a broken part.

Common causes include a blocked pump filter, a kinked or obstructed drain hose, or a small object such as a coin or button stuck in the pump. Because of this, E18 is one of the most common Bosch washing machine faults and is often straightforward to fix at home.

How to fix the Bosch E18 error code

Start by switching off the machine and unplugging it from the mains. It’s a good idea to place some old towels on the floor and have a shallow tray or bowl ready, as water will spill out during this process.

Locate the pump filter access panel at the bottom front of the machine. This is usually a small flap. Open it to access the filter.

Place your tray underneath, then slowly turn the filter cap anti-clockwise. Water will begin to drain out gradually, so take your time to avoid making a mess.

Once the water has drained, fully remove the filter. Check inside it and remove any debris such as coins, buttons, hair grips, or built-up fluff and sludge.

Next, look inside the filter housing where the filter was removed. You should see a small plastic fan known as the pump impeller. Gently try to spin it with your finger. It should move freely. If it feels stuck, carefully remove anything blocking it.

After that, check the drain hose at the back of the machine. Make sure it is not kinked, crushed, or blocked. Also check that the standpipe height is between 60 and 100 cm, as incorrect positioning can affect drainage.

Once everything is clear, refit the filter securely and close the access panel. Plug the machine back in and run a short spin or drain cycle to make sure the issue is resolved.

Why the E18 error happens

Bosch washing machines monitor how quickly water drains during a cycle. If the water level does not drop within a set time, the machine assumes there is a blockage and displays the E18 error code.

Even a small restriction, such as lint buildup or partial blockage, can slow the flow enough to trigger this fault. Regularly cleaning the filter can help prevent the problem from happening again.

When to call an engineer

If you have cleaned the filter and checked the hose but the error still appears, the issue may be inside the machine.

Possible causes include a faulty drain pump, a blockage in the internal hoses, or a wiring issue. These problems are less common and usually require further disassembly, so it may be best to contact an engineer.

Related Bosch error codes

Some Bosch error codes are closely related to drainage issues. For example, E21 indicates slow draining, which can be an early sign of a blockage. E23 indicates a leak has been detected, which can sometimes be linked to drainage problems.

If your machine is showing a different code, it’s worth checking those as well.
