What this error means

The E18 error code on your Bosch washing machine means the machine cannot drain the water away — usually because the pump filter or drain hose is blocked.

When your Bosch washing machine displays the E18 error code, it has detected that water is not draining within the expected time. The machine monitors how long it takes to empty after a wash or rinse cycle — if it takes too long, it stops and shows E18 to protect itself and your home from a potential flood. In the vast majority of cases this is caused by a blocked pump filter (the small round access panel at the bottom front of the machine), a kinked or blocked drain hose, or a blockage further along the waste pipe under your sink. This is one of the most common Bosch washing machine faults and, reassuringly, it is also one of the easiest to fix yourself without any tools or specialist knowledge.

Step-by-step

1
Switch the machine off and unplug it from the wall
Never work on your washing machine while it is connected to power. This is the single most important safety step.
2
Place towels and a shallow tray under the filter cover
There will be water inside the machine. The filter is at the bottom front of the machine behind a small rectangular or circular flap.
3
Slowly unscrew the filter cap anticlockwise
Turn it gradually to let the water drain out little by little into your tray rather than all at once.
4
Remove the filter completely and clean it under a running tap
Remove any fluff, coins, hair grips or debris you find. These are the most common causes of E18.
5
Check the black rubber drain hose at the back of the machine
Make sure it is not kinked, squashed or pushed too far into the standpipe (it should only go in around 15 cm).
6
Refit the filter by screwing it back in clockwise until it is firm
Do not overtighten. Make sure it is fully seated or it will leak.
7
Plug the machine back in and run a short spin-only cycle
If the water drains and the error has gone, the job is done.

How to fix it

Time 20–30 minutes
Skill Anyone
Cut the power and prepare your workspace

Before you do anything else, switch the washing machine off at the wall socket and unplug it. Pull the machine forward slightly so you can reach the back. Lay old towels on the floor around the front and back of the machine — you will be dealing with water and things can get messy.

Always unplug the machine before starting any checks or repairs. Water and electricity are a dangerous combination.
Locate and open the filter access panel

On most Bosch washing machines the pump filter is behind a small flap at the bottom front of the machine, usually on the right-hand side. You can open it with your fingernails or a flat-head screwdriver. Inside you will see a round plastic cap and sometimes a small emergency drain hose with a plug on the end.

If your model has a small drain hose, use that first to drain the water in a controlled way before opening the main filter.
Drain the remaining water

Place a shallow baking tray or lipped container directly under the filter cap. If there is an emergency drain hose, pull out the plug and let the water flow into the tray — empty and repeat until nothing more comes out. If there is no separate drain hose, slowly unscrew the filter cap anticlockwise by a quarter turn at a time to release the water gradually.

The water may be hot if the machine stopped mid-cycle. Take care to avoid scalding yourself.
Remove and clean the filter

Once the water has drained, unscrew the filter cap fully and pull it out. Rinse it thoroughly under a running tap, removing all fluff, fibres, coins, hair clips, or any other debris. Also shine a torch into the filter housing and use your fingers or a cloth to remove any blockage sitting in the cavity itself.

Finding coins or hair grips is extremely common. Check pockets before washing to prevent this happening again.
Inspect the drain hose

Go to the back of the machine and follow the corrugated drain hose. Check the entire length for kinks, sharp bends, or crush damage. If it is connected to the standpipe under your sink, make sure the end of the hose is not pushed in more than 15 cm — pushing it in too far creates a siphoning effect that can cause drain faults.

The drain hose should loop up as high as possible (ideally to worktop height) before going down into the standpipe. This prevents back-siphoning.
Check the waste pipe and sink trap

If the drain hose feeds into the same waste pipe as your sink, run the sink tap and check that water flows away freely. A blocked sink trap can cause the machine to drain slowly and trigger E18. Remove and clean the sink trap if needed.

A slow-draining sink is a strong clue that the blockage is in the shared waste pipe rather than the machine itself.
Refit the filter and run a test cycle

Screw the filter cap back in clockwise until it is snug. Do not overtighten — hand-tight is enough. Close the access panel. Plug the machine back in and select a short spin-only or rinse-and-spin programme. Watch the machine during the drain phase to confirm the water clears fully and the E18 error does not return.

If the error returns after cleaning the filter and checking the hose, the drain pump motor itself may be faulty and will need a qualified engineer to inspect it.

When to call an engineer

  • E18 returns within a few cycles of cleaning the filter
  • Drain pump making a loud grinding or humming noise but water is not moving
  • No blockage found in filter or hose but machine still will not drain
  • Burning smell coming from the pump area
  • Error persists after checking filter, hose, and waste pipe
Common questions

Frequently asked questions

What does the E18 error code mean on a Bosch washing machine?
The E18 error means your Bosch washing machine has failed to drain the water within the expected time. It is a drain fault, most commonly caused by a blocked pump filter, a kinked drain hose, or a blockage in the waste pipe.
Is E18 on a Bosch washing machine serious?
In most cases E18 is not serious and you can fix it yourself in under 15 minutes by cleaning the pump filter. However, if the error keeps coming back after cleaning the filter, the drain pump motor may be failing and you should call a qualified engineer.
Can I still use my washing machine if it shows E18?
You should not run a full wash cycle with an E18 error active as the machine will not be able to drain, which could cause it to overflow or stop part-way through a cycle. Clear the blockage first, then retest.
How do I find the pump filter on my Bosch washing machine?
The pump filter is located at the bottom front of the machine behind a small rectangular or circular access flap, usually towards the right-hand side. You can open it with your fingernails or a flat-head screwdriver.
How often should I clean my Bosch washing machine filter?
Bosch recommend cleaning the pump filter every 3 months as part of routine maintenance. If you wash items with a lot of fluff or pet hair, clean it monthly.
Why does my Bosch washing machine keep showing E18 after I have cleaned the filter?
If E18 returns regularly after cleaning the filter, the most likely causes are a partial blockage further along the drain hose or waste pipe, the drain hose being inserted too far into the standpipe, or a failing drain pump motor. An engineer can test the pump electrically to confirm.
