What does the Indesit F05 error code mean?

F05 on an Indesit washing machine (shared with Hotpoint as they use the same platforms) means the drain pump is not working or is blocked. The machine cannot empty the drum. This is nearly always a blocked pump filter or jammed pump impeller, and is one of the most common washing machine faults in UK homes.

How to fix the Indesit F05 error code

  1. Select a Spin programme and press Start — sometimes this alone forces a successful drain.
  2. If water remains, cancel and unplug the machine. Lay towels on the floor.
  3. Open the pump filter flap at the bottom-front of the machine (usually bottom-right). The filter cap is round and screws anti-clockwise.
  4. Slowly unscrew to drain the water into a tray or towels, then remove completely.
  5. Clean out the filter thoroughly and check the impeller behind it spins freely.
  6. Check the drain hose at the rear is not blocked or kinked, and is at the correct height (60–100cm at the standpipe).
  7. Refit and test. If the fault returns, the pump motor has likely failed and needs replacing.
