What this error means
Unbalanced load — the drum cannot reach spin speed safely
The UE error means the machine has detected that the laundry is too unevenly distributed in the drum to spin safely. LG machines will attempt to redistribute the load automatically by tumbling at low speed before retrying. If balance cannot be achieved after several attempts, UE is displayed. This is a protective feature — an out-of-balance drum spinning at full speed can permanently damage the machine.

Step-by-step
Symptoms to look for
- Spin cycle starts then stops repeatedly before reaching full speed
- Excessive vibration or loud banging before UE appears
- Machine completes the wash but will not enter the spin phase
- UE appears on every spin cycle regardless of load size
How to fix it
Open the door and remove all items. Shake each one out individually to loosen them, then reload loosely one item at a time, placing items evenly around the drum. Avoid bundling items together — pack them in a loose, single layer.
A single large absorbent item — a duvet, a heavy bath mat, a thick jumper — absorbs water unevenly and creates a significant weight imbalance. Wash bulky items with 2 or 3 smaller items to counterbalance them, or use the LG Bedding programme which uses a slower dedicated spin for large items.
Use a spirit level on top of the machine and check in both directions. Adjust all four feet — turn anti-clockwise to raise, clockwise to lower — until the machine is stable with no rocking at any corner. Tighten each locking nut firmly against the base once level.
If the machine was recently installed, check that all transit bolts have been removed from the rear panel. These yellow or red bolts lock the drum for transport. A machine with transit bolts in place will vibrate violently and display UE on every spin cycle.
If the machine is on a smooth tiled or laminate floor, vibration during spin can cause it to walk and rock. Place anti-vibration pads under all four feet to eliminate movement.
Remove a third of the load and restart the spin. If UE clears, the load was too large for the drum to balance. LG recommends loading to no more than three-quarters of the drum capacity for spin programmes.
When to call an engineer
- Drum suspension springs are visibly stretched, detached, or broken
- Shock absorbers are loose, have lost resistance, or are leaking
- UE persists with a single small item — suspension or bearing fault suspected
- Transit bolts were present and machine has been run — suspension damage may have occurred
