What this error means

Inlet water error — the washing machine is not filling with water correctly

The IE error means the machine has failed to receive sufficient water within the allowed fill time. On LG washing machines this is most commonly caused by a closed or partially open water tap, a kinked inlet hose, or a blocked inlet filter mesh. Low water supply pressure at the property will also produce IE. A faulty solenoid inlet valve is a less common but possible cause.

Step-by-step

1
Locate the water supply tap behind the machine and confirm it is turned fully anti-clockwise to the open position
Even a quarter-turn restriction is enough to reduce flow below the threshold LG machines need
2
Pull the machine carefully forward and trace the inlet hose from tap to machine straightening all kinks and bends
A single sharp bend in the hose can halve the flow rate and trigger IE
3
Turn the tap off, disconnect the inlet hose, and clean the small mesh filter inside the inlet port under running water
Limescale and debris in the filter is one of the most common causes of IE in hard water areas
4
Reconnect the hose securely, turn the tap fully on and start a Cotton 40-degree programme to test
The machine should fill within 60 seconds and the programme timer should begin counting

Symptoms to look for

  1. Machine pauses immediately after starting without taking on water
  2. Programme runs but takes far longer than the display estimate
  3. IE displayed within the first 2 to 3 minutes of a programme
  4. Drum feels dry or barely damp after the first 5 minutes

Confirm the water tap is fully open

Find the cold water isolation tap behind or under the machine. Turn it fully anti-clockwise. If uncertain whether it moved, close it fully then reopen.

Have a towel ready before loosening any hose fittings. Water escapes immediately under mains pressure when the seal is broken.
Straighten the inlet hose

Pull the machine carefully away from the wall by holding the machine body. Run your hand along the full hose length and straighten every kink and compressed bend. Push the machine back while watching to ensure it does not kink again behind the cabinet.

If the hose kinks every time the machine is pushed back, fit a 90-degree inlet hose elbow at the machine connection. This permanently resolves hose kinking at a very low cost.
Clean the inlet filter mesh

Turn the tap off fully. Fold a towel under the hose connection at the back of the machine. Unscrew the hose fitting anti-clockwise — water will drip out. Inside the inlet port is a small flat or cylindrical mesh filter. Remove it with tweezers, rinse under running water and scrub with an old toothbrush to remove limescale and debris. Refit firmly.

Never run the machine without the inlet filter in place. It protects the inlet valve from grit and debris that would permanently damage the valve seat.
Test the supply pressure

With the hose disconnected from the machine, point it into a bucket and open the tap for 3 seconds. You should see a strong, uninterrupted flow. A weak trickle indicates a supply pressure problem — LG washing machines require a minimum of 0.5 bar to fill reliably.

If supply pressure is consistently low, a plumber can confirm whether the household stopcock is partially closed or whether a pressure booster is needed.
Inspect the inlet valve

With the machine completely unplugged and water off, remove the rear panel. The inlet valve is where the hose connects internally — a solenoid block with one or two coils. Check for corrosion, cracking, or mineral build-up.

Only access the inlet valve with the machine fully unplugged. The solenoid coils carry mains voltage when energised.
Run a test cycle

Reassemble everything, turn water on fully and start a 40-degree programme. Watch the first 3 minutes — you should hear water entering and the display should begin counting down.

If the machine fills slowly but reaches level without faulting, the filter needs a deeper clean with a descaler tablet run through an empty cycle.

When to call an engineer

  • Water supply pressure confirmed adequate but IE persists after filter cleaning
  • Inlet valve solenoid reads open circuit on a multimeter — valve has failed
  • Valve not opening despite receiving power — confirmed by multimeter testing
  • Wiring to the inlet valve is burnt, corroded, or the connector has melted
Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Why does IE appear even though the water is connected?
The flow rate may be too slow rather than completely absent. A partially closed tap or partially blocked filter restricts flow enough to trigger the fill timeout even with some water present.
What minimum water pressure does an LG washing machine need?
LG specifies a minimum of 0.5 bar. Below this pressure IE will appear even with a fully open tap and clean filter.
Can limescale cause IE on an LG machine?
Yes — in hard water areas limescale builds up gradually in the filter mesh and inlet valve, narrowing the water path. Clean the filter every 3 months and run a descale cycle every 3 to 6 months.
Is it safe to run the machine after IE?
Not until the cause is resolved. Without adequate water the machine cannot wash or rinse correctly and cannot safely cool its heating element.
